EARLY HARRIS FAMILIES  IN JEFFERSON, GREEN,
   PICKENS AND SUMTER COUNTY, ALABAMA.

I am searching for information regarding my gg grandfather, General Marion
Harris (actual given name) who was b. abt. 1838, AL.   His parents are
officially unknown, but were probably Joel Harris and Sarah Swinney.   He
married Susan Goodwin in 1859, had 1 son named Secretary Harris and then
disappeared or died (November 1863) during the battle of Missionary Ridge,
Chatanooga, TN.   "General" served in the 58th Infantry, AL., CSA.

Family information is unproven but it appears that his mother, Sarah
(Swinney,) married James Harris in St Clair County, AL. (1822)
Evidence suggests that James Harris purchased property (1825) and the family
settled in Green County, AL.   He died between 1830 - 1834; after his death,
Sarah purchased property in Sumter and Jefferson County.   Her land entry file
identified her as a widow (1834.)  She subsequently settled in Jefferson
County where some of her descendants lived until the 1920's.

General wasn't born until after his mother, Sarah, settled in Jefferson
County.  She lived in township 16, Range 1 West, (Pinson, AL.) and in 1850,
was living among the same people who were listed near Joel Harris on the
1840 census, suggesting that he was probably General's father.  Other
children in the family are unproven but its likely that William M. Harris
was Sarah's eldest son and she may have had two daughters.  The family may
have also included John P. and James M. Harris.

Any information about any of the families would be greatly appreciated.
