Survey - This cemetery was surveyed on March 11, 1994 by Milton D. Forsyth, Jr.

Graves, Unmarked - There were 6 graves marked only by field stones or depressions.
Status - Unattended, and not easily accessable to the public as it is bounded on four sides by private property. A beautiful wooded site covered with periwinkle. The one loose marked stone is in a brick-mound enclosed burial plot assumed to be that of Joseph and Margaret Armstrong. The other 5 graves are in a line to the south of this enclosure, and appear to have fallen field stone head and foot markers. In 1999 the stones were excavated and examined by a descendant of the family along with Milton Forsyth and Jean Bradley Anderson, but no other markings were found.
County Data - See OC Deed Book 32:145 and OC DB 52:180. Cemetery is located On OC tax map 1.2.6a (incorrectly included in a survey for a 31.31 acre sale in 1970, OC DB 226:1493, Plat Book 18:73).
Photo by Milton Forsyth is a view of Armstrong Cemetery looking north across the graves. The mounded grave plot with the stone marked [J.A.] is to the top of the photo. 1889 Deed Plot showing location of Armstrong Family Cemetery.

This cemetery is located in Durham County, just across the Orange County line. See the Durham County Cemetery Survey for information.
- 096 BARBEE, JOHN FAMILY CEMETERY (BEF. 1810?)
There are no entries under this number. Refer to the reference below For further information.
Location - Cemetery location shown on map on page 160 'Barbee Families of Chatham, Orange, and Wake Counties', ed. Ruth Herndon Shields. Located on the north side of New Hope Creek between Whitfield Road (SR #1730) and Mt. Sinai Road (SR #1718), west of Erwin Road (SR #1734 - formerly Mt. Moriah Church Road). It would appear to be in Duke Forest just NE of Mimosa Drive (which is on the south side of the creek).
The property was originally deeded to John Barbee.
- 123 BARBEE-HARGRAVES CEMETERY - BLACK (CA.1790-1915)
This cemetery was called a 'slave cemetery.'
Location - At the end of Greenwood Road, in the loop, Chapel Hill. Surveyed By M. Nygard, November 16, 1973.
Graves - Approximately 7 indistinct rows of depressions and stones, some 'true stones' very firmly set, probably 40 or 50 graves. Rows much Shorter at either end of oval. Few stones at western end; graves extend to road at eastern end. Difficult to survey because of the large number of native rocks. Some lettering and a date on a large boulder at extreme end: 'Thomas(?) 1805 (?)'
Current Status - Owned by the Town of Chapel Hill. The Town has installed a barrier to exclude vehicles from the site. A plaque on a large boulder on the edge of the cemetery tells that it is the Barbee-Hargrave Cemetery and gives dates of use as 1790-1915. (Copied from 'Historical Notes' 'Chapel Hill Weekly Newspaper' dated May, 1979).
Comment - A note (1978) from Paul Green said that a 104-year-old negro, James Blacknell (of the Hargraves family) told him a Mrs. Flagler was once buried there and an iron fence surrounded the grave, but she was moved. Mr. Green doubted this. Also, Roger Foushee had a note from Ida Durham Lee (1978) that she had talked by telephone to Mrs. Louise Hargraves Durham of Cole St. and Mrs. Bessie Hargraves (pronounced 'Hargrove' most often by blacks) on Crest St. These descendants of the Hargraves slaves' families say that George Hargrove died in 1910 and was buried here, as was his wife Charlotte.

Current Status - The unkempt 25' X 42' 6' family cemetery, almost certainly antedating 1818, was once enclosed by a wire fence (now fallen) attached to posts which have evidently been partially burned in a forest fire and are now mostly fallen. The seven markers in the two rows of graves in the cemetery are fairly recent and all appear to be of the same date. A large Carr marker, bearing the names of 4 John Carrs and valuable genealogical information has fallen. It apparently designates only one grave, that of John Wesley Carr, d. 1889. It seems possible that one of the several depressions may be the grave of John Carr 3rd.

Important Note [1974] - A 1937 survey included both black and white persons in a list headed 'Hillsboro Cemetery Colored' without indicating the cemeteries where these persons were buried. It would appear a typist may have confused the surveyor's lists for Crestmont, Maplewood (#084), and Hillsborough Memorial Cemetery (#079). All except eight (8) graves have now been located. This new listing [in 1974] has made an attempt to clarify and place the name in the proper cemetery. However, confusion may still exist between the Crestmont and Maplewood Cemetery burials and the Hillsborough Cemetery - Black [old] (#227) burials (the cemetery has an undefined location), as well as possibly Hillsborough Memorial Cemetery (#079) burials. See also #228 for the additional names.

Survey - This cemetery was surveyed in December, 1975.
Graves, Marked - There were 126 marked graves.
Graves, Unmarked - There were 375 graves marked by uninscribed fieldstones.
Comment - One of the three oldest cemeteries in Orange County, the others being the Hillsborough Old Town Cemetery (1757) and the old New Hope Presbyterian Church Cemetery (1756). It has some of the most beautiful tombstones in the county. The church was moved two miles from its original site in 1893 after a fire destroyed the third church on this original site on the banks of the Eno River. The cemetery fell to disuse and became isolated. The road was constructed and the cemetery extensively restored in 1965 after having become overgrown because of lack of attention.
Status - Increased development around Lake Orange now makes the cemetery readily accessable on its splendid site on the lakeshore. However, keeping it clean is clearly a substantial task and vegetation had grown up since previous efforts. In 1995 two Girl Scouts, Amy Cloud and Erin Saleeby, seniors at Chapel Hill High school, began a project leading volunteers to clean up the cemetery. By mid-1996 much again was completely clear, and work continued cutting brush and small trees off the remainder. A fine new gate was also installed (see the Raleigh News & Observer, May 2, 1996, P. 1b).

- 150 KIRKLAND FAMILY CEMETERY AT AYR MOUNT (CA. 1817)
Location - Located at Ayr Mount, the Kirkland Family home on St. Mary's Road, .9 mile east of Hillsborough. The 50' X 82' fenced enclosure lies a few yards diagonally northwest of William kirkland's brick manor house.
Surveyor - Miss Annie S. Cameron made a first survey and plat of the Kirkland Family Cemetery in 1966. A second survey & measured plat were made by Jack L. and Onie B. Evans in June 1972. The whole was rechecked May 8, 1974.
Graves, Marked - There were 20 identified graves. Four graves are covered by massive sandstone slabs. The inscription on William Kirkland's (d. 1836) slab is now dim and nearly illegible. The grave of Miss Maggie McLester (d. 1921) is marked only by a rough stone.
Graves, Unmarked - There are almost certainly unidentified graves in this cemetery. Records state that Kenneth William Kirkland, a Scots cousin, and Jane Kirkland, the youngest daughter of John Kirkland, were also buried here on the same day, January 28, 1849, and it is likely that immigrant Scotsman Andrew Mickle is also buried here. There are no visible indications of graves for these last 3 persons.
Current Status - The Kirkland Family Cemetery is a rectangular plot, 50' X 82', enclosed by iron fencing and carefully maintained. Two deodar cedars stand inside the fence at the western corners of the cemetery. A flower-bordered path once led to the entrance gate on the east. Just inside the eastern fence are the vestiges of a 4' wide flagstone walk running along the entire eastern boundary. A forsythia bush and a rose are planted inside the cemetery, and two hackberry trees have grown up outside the western fence.

Comment - The land was originally known as the 'Link Place' and was later owned by Andrew and Sudie Harris. In 1956 Mrs. Harris sold this 98 acre tract to Ed and Frances Blackley, who were the owners in 1987. Elwood Harris always thought it was the old 'Link' slave cemetery. Other family members thought it was an Indian cemetery, since many arrowheads were found in the vicinity during the years it was owned by Andrew Harris. It is Said that Mr. Will Rhew, an adjoining landowner, always referred to this cemetery as a 'community slave cemetery.'
Graves, Marked - None. Roughstones (rocks) mark these graves, but no writing is evident.

- 226 MARGARET LANE CEMETERY - BLACK (CA. 1854 OR EARLIER)
Location - On Lots 233 and 234 in west Hillsborough at the SE intersection of W. Margaret Lane and Hillsborough Ave. The cemetery is bounded on the east by Occoneechee Street.
Survey - This cemetery was surveyed on March 10, 1973.
Graves, Marked - There were 13 marked graves.
Comments - No record was found of the disposition of these two lots, each of which like the rest of the 'railroad lots' contains 5/8 acre. All the lots were sold on October 10, 1854 by the town commissioners and it is likely that Peter Browne Ruffin, the chief landowner and employer in the area, acquired these as a burial ground for his own servants and those of the Cadwallader Jones, Sr. family of nearby 'West Hill.' It is probable that a black cemetery existed here before 1854. If black trustees were ever appointed no record has survived. It seems apparent that the cemetery was well-filled by the 1920s and 1930s, although nearly all the stones have been removed.
Status - Magnificent trees, daylilies and periwinkle still flourish on the beautiful high site. A low stone wall once enclosed the cemetery on the west and north sides with the entrance on the west. Various brick tombs above ground, a number of obelisks, and handsome gravestones are remembered as having stood here in 1918. A single iron-railed Johnson Family enclosure survives on the boundry line as does one fallen obelisk and a fallen stone in the northern part of the cemetery. Other bases of stones are hidden in the grass. Mr. Clyde W. Whitted, Sr. has supplied the names of six other persons known to be buried here; various members of the Browder And David Payne families are also known to be buried here.

Location - Approximately 6 miles south of Chapel Hill in Chatham Co. Turn from Rte 15-501 left on Mt. Gilead Church Rd. Several new houses appear immediately on the left, and the cemetery lies well to the rear of these. A path behind the first house leads downward across a footbridge over a stream, then up an incline & right, down an old deep roadbed for several hundred feet. The cemetery lies well back on the left in a jungle of brambles, but its 5 great cedars serve to mark its location.
Survey - Surveyed on April 20, 1976.

Two headstones have fallen -- those of Dr. James Strudwick Smith and of his son, Dr. Francis Jones Smith. The latter, in pieces, now lies on top of Mary Ruffin Smith's grave. Graves, Marked - There were 41 graves marked.
Graves, Unmarked - There were 5 graves unmarked.
Comment - the first chapel was built in 1759; the present church in 1859. Services were discontinued at the church in the 1930s. The cemetery was apparently not in use by the 1960s. The facility had fallen into disrepair when a renovation project was begun in 1974, and continues today (1997). In 1978 the church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The cemetery today is covered with fallen tree materials, and possibly fewer headstones remain than when the survey was conducted. Two Eagle Scouts built a makeshift stone walkway from the church to the cemetery in 1993. There are plans to restore and open the cemetery to future burials. [see Raleigh News & Observer, 2 Dec 1996, P. 1b].

Follow the drain slightly northward until it can be crossed easily. Go up the sloping hillside until you begin to encounter rough gravestones and depressions. Location - In east central Little River Township almost on the Durham County line, on the north side of Hopkins Road (SR #1537), which turns off Poole Road (SR #1536). The cemetery's two brick pillars are visible.
Survey - Surveyed in January, 1974. Picture of headstones provided by Margaret Jones in April 2003.
Comment - At the entrance to this cemetery are two brick pillars. The right pillar bears the following inscription: 'Turrentine - Every family in America traces his ancestry to this farm.' The left pillar bears the following inscription: 'Turrentine - This is The family Cemetery of Samuel and Alexander, Turrentine brothers, who came from Ireland in 1745.' [See the book by George Rutherford Turrentine, 'The Turrentine Family,' esp. pp. 549-551.]

- 206 UNIDENTIFIED CEMETERY - CARRBORO AREA [SMITH LEVEL ROAD]
There are no burials listed for this cemetery.
Location - Rock-walled cemetery is in side-yard of the Paul Long home on the east side of Smith Level Road (SR #1435).
Survey - This cemetery was surveyed on 26 April 1976.
Current Status - The cemetery is square and surrounded by a high dry stone wall. Daylilies and yucca almost surround the exterior walls. A lilac grows on the south side. Two headstones, rough and uninscribed, are visible inside the enclosure although much refuse of every kind has been dumped and burned here-to keep down snakes so it is said. No one seems able to provide a clue to the graves inside the Wall.
- 207 UNIDENTIFIED CEMETERY - CHAPEL HILL [SHADY LAWN ROAD]
There are no burials listed for this cemetery.
Location - A rock-walled cemetery which lies behind 709 Shady Lawn Road in the triangle formed by the intersection of Kenmore Road and Shady Lawn Road.
Survey - Surveyed in August, 1974.
Current Status - The cemetery contains rough stones with no identification mark of any kind. It has become a playground for neighborhood children who have torn down the walls and moved stones to such an extent that in Aug, 1974, it has been almost impossible to survey it as a burial ground. Stones are now scattered over a considerable area and few remain in place. Plat indicates that the cemetery was evidently 40' square with walls approximately 3' wide and 2' tall. Base stones at the corners are still in place. The cemetery plat seems to have contained 3 rows of graves with 7 or 8 graves to the row. It is possible that there may also be 1 row of graves outside the east wall. Depressions are indicated on the plat, and stones still firm in the ground are marked in black. The deepest depression is that of grave #3 in row 1, probably the oldest of the rows. The entire cemetery is covered with periwinkle which has escaped outside the walls.
- 130 UNIDENTIFIED CEMETERY - CHEEK-MARKHAM LAND [DESTROYED]
There are no burials listed for this cemetery.
Location - The cemetery was located SE of Chapel Hill in the development 'The Reserve II' north of a private drive off Madera Lane, on Lot 9, approximately 50 paces SE down the road and 75 paces NE into the lot from that point.
Survey - This cemetery was visited by Shirley Glasgow of the Durham-Orange Genealogical Society in September, 1995, prior to its destruction.
Graves, Unmarked - There were approximately 24 graves marked by some fieldstones or merely depressions.
Status - This cemetery was destroyed and the graves removed to the Markham Memorial Gardens in October, 1995.
Comment - This property was purchased by James M. Cheek from A. S. Jones on 1 Dec 1859 (OC DB 49:393). It had previously been in the possession of William Barbee and prior to that John Daniels. The Cheek family home was WSW of the cemetery and the remains have been preserved in a small park. It is possible the home Or homesite pre-dated the sale; the path to the old Barbee Mill on Morgan Creek to the north passed a short distance to the west of the homesite. James M. Cheek died in 1884, and he and his family seem to have been buried in the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery or other nearby cemeteries. The land passed to his son Joseph Addison Cheek and from him to his wife, Nancy Jane Andrews Cheek, then to their daughter, Luna Cheek Markham in about 1927 when Nancy died. No mention of the cemetery is found in any deeds (the most likely one it would have appeared in if the family had an interest in it was the division of the James M. Cheek property in 1886 (OC DB 53:48)). It is possible this was a slave/black cemetery but James M. Cheek had only one female slave in 1860; he did have some black Or mulatto employees in 1870 named Cheek. Quite possibly the cemetery predates the Cheek family. It was further noted that there appeared to be several graves near the old Cheek residence, to the west from the front north corner of the house about 50 paces, surrounded by several large trees. Nothing is known about these possible graves.
Photo is of two pictures taken of the marker in Markham Memorial Gardens in Durham County. Left photo by Shirley Glasgow taken in February 1996. Right phot of same marker taken by Milton Forsyth in September 2002.

Graves, Unmarked - There appear to be as many as 30 graves, a number marked with fieldstones.
Status - The cemetery is on private property. The area of burials is preserved and nicely maintained in a natural state by the current residents at this location.
Comment - According to Mr. Crabtree, tradition associates the cemetery with a 'Couch' family. It appears th be a 19th century or earlier burial ground. Nothing more is known about it at this time.

Location - Shown in a 1970s diagram to be east off Hwy 86 North, about 3 miles north of the Hwy 86-Bypass 70 intersection in northern Hillsborough [in 1996]. Go up a hill on Hwy 86, past a concrete block store on the right [in 1996 enlarged by a wooden structure but apparently abandoned, with a one-story apartment building off to the rear], and with Jones Grove Baptist Church sitting back off to the left of the highway. 'Charlie Torain's' house [in the 1970s] stood on the right, [whether or not you go as far as Coleman Loop Road (SR #1334) was not shown]; you were to turn right just past his house on an old road and drive east for some undetermined distance. The cemetery was not shown on the chart [which suggests a survey was never made].
