363. John H.8 DOTY (Samuel S.7, Elizabeth6 SUTTON, Uriah5, Zebulon4, Daniel3, William2, George1) was born in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey January 18, 1844. John died January 4, 1937 at the Disabled Veteran's Home in Menlo Park, Middlesex County, New Jersey at 92 years of age.(345) He was interred January 7, 1937 at Connecticut Farms Churchyard, Section I, Row L in Union, Union County, New Jersey.(346)

He married Charlotte M. COLE September 10, 1868 at Second Reformed Dutch Church in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York.(347) Charlotte was born January 11, 1851 in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York. Charlotte was the daughter of Milton COLE and Jane WOOD. Charlotte died November 18, 1923 at 251 First Avenue, East in Roselle, Union County, New Jersey at 72 years of age.(348) She was interred November 20, 1923 at Connecticut Farms Churchyard, Section I, Row L in Union, Union County, New Jersey.(349)

In 1865, at age fourteen, Charlotte was living with her aunt and uncle, Martha and Nathaniel Codwise. Her Aunt Martha was her mother's sister. Her mother had died at age 37 in 1860 and her father had probably died about four years later.

There is some confusion regarding the year of her birth. Ages listed on census records, her death certificate, and the church cemetery records place her birth between 1850 and 1853. Considering this information, along with the record of her parents marriage, 1851 is concluded to be the most likely.

Following her marriage, in September 1868, she lived in Poughkeepsie until the spring of 1879. The remainder of her life was spent in New Jersey where she died, aged 72 years, 10 months, 7 days.

The following obituary appeared in the November 19, 1923 edition of the Elizabeth Daily Journal newspaper:

MRS. JOHN H. DOTY

ROSELLE, Nov. 19--After a long illness, Mrs. Charlotte M. Doty, 73 years old, wife of John H. Doty, died yesterday morning at her home, 251 First avenue, east.

Born in Poughkeepsie, N. Y., Mrs. Doty lived in Roselle about eighteen years. She resided in Elizabeth one year. Mrs. Doty was a member of the Wesley Methodist Church, of Roselle. Her husband has been retired for several years.

In addition to her husband, two sons, Samuel and Edward M. Doty, a daughter Mrs. Olive Wright, eight grandchildren, and a brother, Alfred M. Cowles, survive.

John H. Doty moved, with his parents, from Newark to Union, NJ prior to June 1850. He does not appear with the rest of his family on the 1860 US Census of Union, but a John Doty of the correct age does appear in the 3rd Ward of Elizabeth, NJ apprenticed to a Sash and Blind Manufacturer.

During the Civil War, in August 1862, he volunteered and was accepted as a member of Company B, Thirtieth Regiment New Jersey Infantry. He served until the unit was mustered out on 27 June 1863. Military records indicate that the 30th New Jersey Infantry did not see combat, being engaged primarily in garrison duty and in guarding the railroads. The unit was called up as reserves at the Battle of Chancellorsville but did not see action.

In 1865 he was in Poughkeepsie, NY employed as a paper maker. He remained in Poughkeepsie until the spring of 1879. While there he married Charlotte Cole and their four children were born. The family returned to New Jersey where he lived for the remainder of his life. The 1880 US Census lists his occupation as Farm Laborer. Censuses of 1900, 1910, and 1915 show him working as a Railroad Station Agent. He died at the Soldier's Home in Menlo Park, NJ two weeks short of his ninety third birthday.

The following article appeared in the January 5, 1937 edition of the Elizabeth Daily Journal newspaper:

J. H. DOTY DIES, VETERAN OF '61

Roselle Man, 93 Years Old, Long Borough Resident

ROSELLE, Jan 5--John H. Doty, 93 years old, believed to be the last Civil War veteran in the Twin Boroughs, died yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Disabled Veterans Home, Menlo Park following a three days illness. He resided with his daughter, Mrs. E. C. Wright, 251 First avenue, east, but went to the home recently for medical treatment. If he had lived until January 18, he would have reached his ninety fourth year.

Born in Newark, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Doty, he removed to Union with his parents when a young boy. He joined the Union forces at Flemington when only 18 years old. He enlisted in Company B, Thirtieth New Jersey Volunteers, under Capt. James B. Van Der Veer and was honorably discharged from service June 27, 1863. He fought in several major engagements of the Civil War. He was an honorary member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

After the war he went to work as a painter for the Central Railroad of New Jersey. In 1895 he lost his right leg when run down by an engine in the Jersey City yards while at work. Given a lifetime job, he served as gatetender at the Lorraine crossing here until 1923, when he retired with a pension.

Mr. Doty had resided here the past forty years. His wife, Charlotte F. Doty, died in 1923, just prior to his retirement from the railroad.

He made his last public appearance when he headed the Memorial Day parade here in 1934, riding with his grandson, Fire Chief George S. Wright. Upon the occasion of his ninetieth birthday anniversary he was honored with a reception at the home of his daughter and at that time received a telegram of felicitations from A. Harry Moore, then Governor.

Survivors include the daughter, Mrs. Wright; two sons, S. C. Doty, of Hillside and E. H. Doty, of Cranford; ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. The body has been removed to the Funeral Home of J. C. Prall, 174 First avenue, east.
