347. Mary Beman8 GATES (Betsy Sybil7 SHIPMAN, Charles6, Joshua5, Samuel4, John Humphrey3, John2, Edward1) was born August 27, 1842. Mary died October 28, 1921 at 79 years of age.

She married Rufus R. DAWES January 18, 1864. Rufus died 1899.

Mary Beman GATES and Rufus R. DAWES had the following child:

child 467 i. Charles Gates9 DAWES was born in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio August 27, 1865. Charles died October 23, 1951 in Evanston, Cook County, Illinois at 86 years of age.

He is the sixth cousin, twice removed of the writer. They are descended from Mathew Grant and Edward Shipman, both early settlers of Connecticut. Charles Dawes enjoyed a long career in finance and public service. He was appointed U.S. Comptroller of the Currency by President McKinley and served from 1898 to 1902. Returning to private life, he organized the Central Trust Co. of Illinois which became a major bank in the middle west. He was head of procurement for the American Expeditionary Force during World War I, resigning in 1919 as a Brigadier General. He was the first U.S. Director of the Budget in 1921. He was author of the "Dawes Plan" for managing Germany's reparations payments following World War I. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, jointly with Sir Austen Chamberlain, in 1925. He was elected 30th Vice President of the United States, serving in that office under President Coolidge from 1925 to 1929. He served as U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain from 1929 until 1932. After a short term as head of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, he returned to private life in 1932 and reentered the banking business. He died in Evanston, Illinois in 1951 at the age of 86.
