Josiah C.⁷ SHIPMAN (Joseph Tuttle⁶, Aaron⁵, John⁴, David³, John², Edward¹) was born in Springfield, Essex County, New Jersey November 3, 1824.⁽²⁹⁴⁾ Josiah died May 1, 1894 at Valley Road in Millburn, Essex County, New Jersey at 69 years of age.⁽²⁹⁵⁾ He was interred May 1894 at the Presbyterian Cemetery, in Springfield, Union County, New Jersey.⁽²⁹⁶⁾

He married Mary P. ERLY July 19, 1846 at the First Baptist Church in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey.⁽²⁹⁷⁾ Mary was born circa 1828 in Ireland. Mary died October 9, 1884 in Millburn, Essex County, New Jersey at 56 years of age.⁽²⁹⁸⁾ She was interred October 1884 at the Presbyterian Cemetery, in Springfield, Union County, New Jersey.⁽²⁹⁹⁾

Josiah Shipman served in the Civil War as a Private in Company A, 13th Regiment, New Jersey Infantry from 25 August 1862 until 8 June 1865. The Regiment was attached to the Army of the Potomac until 24 September 1863. It was then detached and assigned to the Army of the Tennessee until November 1864. The Regiment then joined the Army of General Sherman on the march through Georgia and the Carolinas.

The Regiment served in numerous major engagements, including Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the siege of Atlanta, and the capture of Savannah, Georgia.

Josiah's Volunteer Enlistment papers, dated 7 August 1862 at Newark, New Jersey, gives his age as thirty seven, his birthplace as Springfield, and his occupation as Shoemaker. He is described as having black eyes, black hair, light complexion, and being 5 feet 6 1/2 inches high.

She is listed on the 1850 US Census of Newark, NJ as Elizabeth D. Shipman, aged 1 year old. On the 1860 US Census of Newark, NJ, she is called Delaphine Shipman, aged 11 years old. The Springfield Presbyterian Church record of her marriage to John A. Reeve gives her name as Delaphine A. Shipman. No birth or baptismal records have been located to clarify these differences.

375 iii. Charles F. SHIPMAN was born in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey December 12, 1850.⁽³⁰¹⁾ Charles died June 27, 1852 in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey at 1 year of age.⁽³⁰²⁾

376 iv. Charles L. SHIPMAN was born in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey June 6, 1853. Charles died January 10, 1916 in New Jersey at 62 years of age. He was interred January 1916 at the Presbyterian Cemetery, in Springfield, Union County, New Jersey.⁽³⁰³⁾ He married Anna WELSH November 29, 1879 in Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa. Anna was born April 1851 in Virginia. Anna died October 27, 1934 in New Jersey at 83 years of age.⁽³⁰⁴⁾ She was interred October 1934 at the Presbyterian Cemetery, in Springfield, Union County, New Jersey.⁽³⁰⁵⁾
