Joseph Tuttle⁶ SHIPMAN (Aaron⁵, John⁴, David³, John², Edward¹) was born in Springfield, Essex County, New Jersey November 15, 1790.⁽¹⁸⁴⁾ Joseph died February 20, 1861 in Millburn, Essex County, New Jersey at 70 years of age.⁽¹⁸⁵⁾ He was interred February 1861 at the Presbyterian Cemetery, in Springfield, Union County, New Jersey.⁽¹⁸⁶⁾

He married Mary TOMPSON March 3, 1816 in New Jersey. Mary was born June 5, 1798. Mary died September 25, 1846 in Springfield, Essex County, New Jersey at 48 years of age.⁽¹⁸⁷⁾ She was interred September 1846 at the Presbyterian Cemetery, in Springfield, Essex County, New Jersey.⁽¹⁸⁸⁾ She was baptized August 19, 1832 in Springfield, Essex County, New Jersey.⁽¹⁸⁹⁾

Joseph Shipman's death was registered in both Essex and Union Counties. Although unusual for a death to be registered in two counties, this was probably the result of his death occuring in Essex County while he was a resident of Union County. Both County Clerk's Registers indicate that he died on February 20, 1861. His tombstone inscription gives the date of death as February 20, 1860.

As tombstones frequently were inscribed with incorrect dates, the County Registers would appear to be the more reliable source. However, the fact that Joseph has not been located in the 1860 US Census for the area lends credibility to the tombstone date. No other information has been found to resolve this disparity.

She was baptized circa 1835 in Springfield, Essex County, New Jersey.⁽¹⁹¹⁾
