275. Nathaniel6 BAKER (Nathaniel P.5, Nathaniel4, Daniel3, Nathaniel2, Thomas1) was born in Westfield, Essex County, New Jersey circa 1778. Nathaniel died March 13, 1813 in New Jersey at 34 years of age. He was interred March 13, 1813 at Presbyterian Church Cemetery, in Westfield, Essex County, New Jersey.(475)
He married Hannah FRAZEE circa 1800 in Essex County, New Jersey. Hannah was born November 28, 1784 in Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey.(476) Hannah was the daughter of Morris FRAZEE and Mary SCUDDER. Hannah died September 21, 1865 in New Jersey at 80 years of age.(477) She was interred September 1865 in New Jersey.
Her first husband, Nathaniel Baker, died of pleurisy in March 1813. The will of Nathaniel's mother, Rachel Baker, written in 1810, names his daughter Rachel as an heir. Westfield Presbyterian Church records show Rachel Baker, daughter of Nathaniel, admitted to membership in May 1820 and dismissed in March 1837. Record annotations indicate that during her membership she married someone named Davis, who through census and church records was determined to be John Davis of Union. Despite the evidence contained in both church records and her grandmother's will, Matthias is named as Rachel's father on the Union County Death Register for 1861.
Westfield Presbyterian Church Funeral records also show the death of a minor child of Nathaniel Baker, deceased, in September 1815. It appears that this child, Rachel Baker Davis and Mary F. Baker, called a daughter of Matthias at the time of her marriage to William Jennings in 1829, are children of Hannah's first marriage. All are included herein, as such, until proven otherwise.
He was baptized August 30, 1778 in Westfield, Essex County, New Jersey.(478)
Mary and Rachel have been designated as children of this family although they have, at different times, been called daughters of Matthias Baker. It is believed that both are the daughters of Nathaniel and became the step daughters of Matthias when he married his brother's widow in 1815.
Mary, who was called "daughter of Matthias" in the record of her marriage to William Jennings in 1829, was born too early to be the child of Matthias who was approximately 12 years old at the time of her birth.
Rachel is named as the daughter of Nathaniel in both her grandmother's will of 1810 and in records of the Westfield Presbyterian Church when she was admitted to membership in 1820. The Union County, New Jersey Register of Deaths for 1861, however, calls her the daughter of Matthias.
