Wanted 16 Ounces of Candy.  Mr. Enoch Moreland objected to an Italian fruit vender giving him but 12 ounces of candy when he paid a dime for a pound yesterday at the corner of 7th and F Streets.  He seized the weights and after many espostulations from the Italian, which attracted quite a crowd, Mr. Moreland walked up the street carrying the weights and declaring that he would bring the matter to the attention of the authorities.  The crown followed him in his search for a policeman.

Washington Post July 3, 1898.

Killed Himself for Grief.  A Former Washington Man Commits Suicide in Baltimore.  Dec. 28 Thomas Moreland died this afternoon at his home, ....from the effects of a dose of carbolic acid taken with suicidal intent.  Mrs. Moreland said her husband had not been out of the house since Friday, and for a week has been in deep grief over the death of a brother in Washington.  A few minutes before 2 o'clock this afternoon he called downstairs to his wife "I have taken."  She inquired what he meant, and then he told her he had drank poison.  Previous to taking the poison Moreland spoke to his little son, who was preparing to go to Sunday school, saying:  "Good-bye, Eugene.  Go to Sunday school, and when you get back come up stairs and see me."

Mr. Moreland was about 48 years old.  He was born in Washington, where his relatives live.  Up to about 8 years ago he had employment in the Departments at Washington.

"Well-known Game Merchant Succumbs to Affection of the Brain.  Mr. Walter M. Moreland, the well-known fish and game merchant, died at his late residence, 1720 Eighth St. NW, shortly after 9 last night.  Mr. Moreland was in the fiftieth year of his age, and up to the past two months had been in the best of health.  He was some time ago stricken with an affection of the brain and while he had been given the best of attention during the last illness, hopes for his recovery were abandoned a week ago by his friends.

Mr. Moreland was born at Brightwood, DC and for 15 years was connected with the firm of R.A. Golden.  For years he managed a branch of their business.  About two years ago he established the firm of W.M. Moreland & Co. and opened a stand in the Center Market.

Mr. Moreland was a Mason and funeral services will probably be conducted by that body on Monday afternoon.  The interment will be at Rock Creek Cemetery.  Wade H. Moreland, who served as a corporal in Co. K, First District of Columbia, Volunteers under Capt. Glendie B. Young, is a son of the deceased.  He is but nineteen years of age.  Mr. Moreland also leaves a widow, a daughter, who was associated with him in business, and two younger daughters.  A sister, who resides in Baltimore, is expected at the home this morning."

Wade Moreland, 17 years old, was arrested and locked up at the First Prescinct Station, charged with the larceny of $55 which was taken from a desk in the office of Attorney H.F. Woodward.  The boy confessed to the theft upon being arrested and gave the officers information that led to the recovery of the money.  Some time ago Moreland got into trouble and was befriended by Mr. Woodward who took a kindly interest in the boy and gave him employment as an office boy.

The Washington Post Jan. 14, 1899:

Wade H. Moreland, one of the District volunteers and son of Walter Moreland, the well-known merchant, is lying at the point of death in his home, 611 Whitney Ave. NW.  Young Moreland enlisted as a private in Co. K, was promoted to be Corporal while in Cuba and fought off sickness until the regiment reached Montauk, when he succumbed and was sent to the hospital.  He has been an invalid ever since, and 10 days ago took to bed.  The attending physicians pronounce it  a case of Cuban fever, and owing to his enfeebled constitution, his condition is very critical.
