Dinwiddie Co., Virginia Morlands

Formed 1752 from Prince George Co.

Descendents of Francis Moreland

There is controversy over the lineage of Francis Moreland who died 1797 in Greene Co., GA. The largest piece of evidence to prove that he is not the son of John Moreland who died 1706 in York Co., VA and his wife Ann Bell is the court document dated 1786 where he states that his brother, Thomas, moved to NC ca 1778 and was 60 years old at the time of this document - so born ca 1716. Also, Francis died 1797 - so could hardly have been born in the 1680-1690 time period that the rest of John's children were born.

Since the first document we have of Francis is that he had 400 acres in Prince George Co., VA in 1732, this would make his birth date around 1711.

So, we need to research on what we know from primary documentation and that is that he, indeed, had a brother, Thomas, born ca 1716 who was in Dinwiddie Co., VA before 1786 and moved to NC about that time. And that this Francis was most likely born ca 1711. See North Carolina Moreland page. And, we will add the following documentation from there.

Francis Moreland was born ca 1711 and died ca 1797 in Greene Co., GA.

The following is an affidavit taken from CR073.325.8 at N.C. State Archives in Raleigh. It was filed in Orange County, NC, pursuant to a matter of debt.

"Dinwiddie County

"By virtue of the comission hereunto annexed to us and others directed, Francis Moreland personally appeared before us as a witness in a cause depending in Orange County North Carolina between the executors of John Heath, pltffs, assignee of James Greenway and Thomas Moreland, Dft; and the sd Frs MORELAND being first duly sworn deposeth and saith That he has a brother of the name of Thomas Moreland now resident as he believes in North Carolina; and that at the last time he was at his brothers house, abt one year ago last fall, he was living on the waters of New Hope as he told this Deponent and in Orange County as he believes. That his said brother was formerly an inhabitant of Dinwiddie County living in the neighborhood of Doct. James Greenway, who kept a store and it is highly probable as this Deponent thinks had dealings with the said Greenway. That his brother moved away from this county about eight or nine years ago to the best of his remembrance, ever since which he has resided in No Carolina as he believes. That this Deponent knows of no other Moreland of his brother's name. That, if now alive he is about sixty years of age, looks well and was pretty fat when this deponent last saw him. When living in Dinwiddie was fond of Liquor and talkative in his cups and further this deponent saith not.

Francis Moreland

Taken at Dinwiddie Court House the seventeenth day of April one thousand seven hundred and eighty six, being sworn to by the sd deponent as interlined above before

John Mitchell
William Watts"

Comment: Francis and family apparently all went to Greene Co., GA at the end of the 1700's. There is a John Moreland who died in Greene Co., GA with a Lucy Moreland applying for letters of administration in Feb. 1799. Wonder if this is another brother of Francis?

From The Handbook of Texas History Online:

MORELAND, ISAAC N. (?-1842). Isaac N. (J. N.) Moreland (Mourland), soldier and jurist of the Republic of Texas,qv was born in Georgia. He moved in the fall of 1834 to Texas and established himself at Anahuac. Soon thereafter he moved to Liberty, where he served as secretary of the ayuntamiento.qv On April 17, 1835, he became one of the four signers of the Liberty Resolutions, which called on Texans to respect the laws of Mexico and to refrain from resisting the payment of customs duties. However, Moreland was the author of the Anahuac Resolutions, signed on May 4, 1835 (see ANAHUAC DISTURBANCES). These protested what the citizens of the area considered to be unjust and arbitrary taxation by customs officials. This document was forwarded to the political chief of the jurisdiction and to the governor of Coahuila. Andrew Janeway Yates, Augustus Chapman Allen, qqv and Moreland wrote a letter of protest against the seizure by Mexican navy captain Thomas M. (Mexico) Thompsonqv of a sloop that they had chartered to transport freight to Velasco and Thompson's apparently arbitrary blockade of the mouth of the Brazos River. In October 1835 Moreland joined the Texas army. In a letter to Governor Henry Smithqv dated November 31, 1835, Col. James W. Fannin, Jr.,qv recommended Moreland for a commission in the Texas army. On December 20, 1835, Gen. Sam Houstonqv appointed Moreland a captain of the First Regiment of Infantry in the regular army and ordered him to Harrisburg to establish a recruiting station. His appointment was approved by the General Councilqv on March 10, 1836. At the battle of San Jacinto,qv Moreland served with the "Twin Sisters"qv under Lt. Col. George Washington Hockley,qv although Moreland later wrote to Mirabeau B. Lamarqv that he had been "the oldest officer in rank of the Artillery for duty, at the Battle of San Jacinto." A man named Haskell, who signed himself as an army surgeon, wrote from the field that "Capt. Moreland commanded a cannon, and the duty was well performed; the first shot carried away the enemies powder box, and wounded the adjutant general and several others." After San Jacinto, Moreland was assigned to command Fort Travis at Galveston. On July 20, 1836, he was promoted to major, and on October 29, 1836, Sam Houston appointed him commandant of the garrison at Galveston. Moreland was discharged from the army on April 27, 1837, and moved to Houston, where, on May 29, he announced his partnership in the practice of law with David G. Burnet.qv By 1840 he owned two Houston city lots, a slave, and a gold watch, in addition to 600 acres in Harrisburg County. On January 30, 1840, President Lamar appointed him chief justice of the Second Judicial District, then Harrisburg County, to succeed Benjamin Cromwell Franklin.qv He held the post until his death, on June 9, 1842. He is buried in an unmarked grave in City Cemetery on West Dallas Avenue, Houston. He was a Mason.

The San Jacinto Museum of History also has a biography of Isaac which says that he was born in Georgia and also that the Telegraph and Texas Register, Houston of June 15, 1842 carried the following notice regarding his death:

"Another Hero of San Jacinto gone - The Hon. Isaac N. Moreland, late Chief Justice of Harris County, and the commander of the Artillery Company in the Battle of San Jacinto, died in this city Thursday morning [June 9]. His remains were followed to the grave by a very large and respectable concourse of citizens, including the Masonic and other fraternities, and the independent military companies of the city; and many of his companions in arms, who had stood by him in the field of battle, assembled around his grave, to pay the last tribute of respect to their beloved comrade."
