• According to Mitchell: "Generally, Church of Ireland graveyards should be examined irrespective of an ancestor's religion. It was October 1829 before a Catholic cemetery opened in Dublin at Goddenbridge. Prior to the 1820s, owing to the operation of Penal laws, both Catholics and Protestants shared the same graveyards". He goes on to explain that not until 1868 were dissenting ministers allowed to perform burial services. Thus we are to infer that until that time both Catholics and Protestants shared the same graveyards in many cases.
• This listing of graveyards is based in part on a mid-nineteenth century ordnance survey; some of the graveyards may no longer exist
• The table is subject to error in that the various references consulted are not always clear when identifying a graveyard's location. This especially true when the parish and cemetry name are one and the same for one cannot tell wether the author meant the parish or the townland. Please submit corrections to the author.

  • PLU - Poor Law Union
• A cemetery listed in UPPERCASE letters is in a town or village. This is the same notation used in the IreAtlas Townland database to distinguish a town from a townland.
• The cemeteries at the begining of the table could not be assoicated uniquely with a given parish, barony and poor law union. Please submit additonal information to the author..

  • In Dundereirke, Kilnamartyra, Macroom, there is an old cemetery which is no longer active. Burials for St. Lactine's Church in Kilnamartyra were in this cemetery. I don't know when this one was abandoned in favor of the present day cemetery which is located immediately adjacent to the Church. Donna
