John Ferguson, one of Olyphant's pioneer residcnts, passed away
at his residence in that town at 5.30 o'clock yesterday morning, after an
illness of several weeks. About four years ago deceased suffeted a stroke of
paralysis, from which he recoveted, but owing to his advanced age he never
regained his former health, Mr. Ferguson, was born in County Mayo, Ireland, In
1820, andcame to this country in 1844. He firist located in Carbondale, where
he taught school for a number of years. From there he moved to Archbald, and in
1870 he came to Olyphant, where he had since resided. He was well-known in the
community. Honest, industrious, unobtrusive, walking quietly in his way of
life, doing conscientiously what he had to do, he was respected and esteemed by
all who knew him. Besides his wife, he is survived by six sons and four
daughters. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon. Interment will be made
in St. Patrick's cemetery.
