This, like the Parish Church, is in the main street but lies between it:
Comber Road and the newer Belfast road. There was a congregation in the
Saintfield area (Tonaghneave) from the Cromwellian period and presumably a
church from soon afterwards, but the present edifice as not started until 1777
and the oldest stone in the graveyard dates from 1780. Inside the church is a
tablet with the words "Consider that here worship in the presence of him who
seeth your actions and will shortly be your judge. Built in the year 1777,
Thomas L. Birch, A.M., Minister." The baptismal register only goes back to 1851
and there is no marriage or burial register of the last century.
The graveyard extends down to marshy ground in which those killed on both sides in the Battle of Saintfield (9th June 1798) were buried. Two stones commemorating local victims are in this part. All the dates of death earlier than 1865 have been copied, though there were several illegible stones and some without inscriptions or with initials only. There is a full history of the congregation by the Rev. David Wart, Belfast, 1958.
