Catherine Driscoll was born in the city of Cork, Ireland in 1822, her mother died when she was only nine days old. She was raised by her mother's family. and grew up regarding her aunts and uncles as her brothers and sisters and went by their name of Hart. While she was a young girl an aunt who was living in New York City, sent for her to come to America.

Later she went to Rochester, NY which had just been incorporated as a city.There she met Patrick Hodnett and they were married October 5, l839 and soon after went to Fillmore, NY to live.

The work on the Genesee Valley Canal was then in progress and there were quite an influx of Irish into this area. Patrick worked on the canal, and also he and Catherine kept a boarding house, having as many as eighteen boarders at a time. She did all the work herself as well as taking care of her children.
