Pedigree Chart

The oldest of my Driscoll ancestors that I have been able to trace is my Great Grandfather Daniel Patrick Driscoll who was believed to be the son of a John Driscoll and his mother's name is unknown. He was born somewhere between 1858 and 1862, probably 11/5/1862 but given as 11/5/1858 so he could join the Merchant Navy as an Engineer in Burma. Documents obtained from the Oriental and Indian Collection of the British Library indicate that he was born in Limerick, Ireland. He married Isabella Marchall at St Thomas's Cathedral, Calcutta in 1880. He lived a very colourful life. He went to school in Burma before serving in the Mercantile Marine and also served in the Burma campaign before going to South Africa and serving in the Boer War from 1899 to 1902. He appears to have parted from Isabella at this point. It is believed Isabella died in around 1916. Daniel was initially a Captain and later Lieutenant-Colonel in command of the Driscoll Scouts. He was awarded the DSO, Queen's Medal and much has been written about his part in the war in South Africa. He was subsequently appointed CEO of the Legion of Frontiersmen. Served in the European war in command of the 25th Battn, Royal Fusiliers. Awarded the Croix de Guerre in 1917 and created a CMG in 1919. He left for East Africa in 1919 and died in Ruiru in Kenya in 1934. He and Isabella had six children, Catherine (Born 5/7/1883), Elleen, Ida (Born 27/12/1884), Brien (Born 28/10/1885), Dermot (Born 20/11/1890), Felix, Terence (Born 14/5/1893)and Kathleen (Birth date unknown, probably around 1881-1882, but apparently the oldest of the six children). Upon their return from Burma, Isabella and the children settled in and she apparently lived in Brighton UK after returning from Burma in around 1901-1902, but I have been unable to find any trace of them except for my grandfather Brien.

Brien was my grandfather and subsequently changed his name to Brian O'Neill Driscoll. He married Margaret, Kathleen Calnan (born in Cardiff on 8/11/1892) in Richmond, Surrey, UK on 19/8/1916. Brian O'Neill Driscoll was in the South African police before moving to Kenya eventually and then back to the UK after divorcing my grandmother. I don't know exactly when this happened but my father must have been quite young because he doesn't have much recollection of that event. Brian and Margaret had three children, Terence, Dermot and Dennis.
