• May 21, 1850 - Terrible Calamities.- By the falling of the bonded warehouse in Water-street, and the old chemical bank building in Broadway, eight persons were killed. The following is the list of dead, the wounded, and the living as far as we have been able to ascertain it:- John Hourigan. 33 years of age, a native of Ireland, dead. Patrick Barry, 27 years of age, a native of Ireland, dead. Edward M'Shane [McShane?], 20 years of age, a native of Ireland, dead. John Hayes, 28 years of age, a native of Ireland, dead. William Pratt, 22 years of age, a native of Ireland, dead. John Lavery, 25 years of age, a native of Ireland, dead. John Driscoll, a native of Ireland, dead. John Riley, a native of Ireland, missing.- Thomas Leahy, wounded. Hugh M'Shane [McShane?], escaped unhurt. Michael Connor, safe. John Harvey, safe. The mangled remains of the dead in the foregoing list present a sight almost too horrible for humanity to bear. - 'The New York Herald.'

• Dec 24 1856 - ATTEMPT TO PASS A FLASH NOTE.—A girl named Honora Driscoll was brought before the presiding magistrate at the Police-office, this day, Mr. John Besnard, jun., charged with an attempt to defraud Messrs. Ogilvie, Sutherland and Co., by means of a flash note. She had been purchasing some ribbons and small matters of the kind, and to pay for them tendered in payment an advertisement of the house of a person named King in Dublin, which, from the manner in which it was got up, and the words “five pounds” being printed in various parts in a conspicuous manner, bore some resemblance to a five pound bank note. The prisoner was remanded.
• January 18, 1847 - On yesterday, Joseph Driscoll, of Skull, Poor Rate Collector, went to the lands of Rissbrine, in the parish of East Skull, to collect rates, and on coming to the house of a man named Regan, the door was shut, when he repeatedly knocked at it to no effect, he then pushed in the door, and what was his astonishment to find three men dead in the house, and no other person in it but the three lifeless corpses?

• Jul5 1862 - Henry Holmes and John Driscoll were indicted for attempting to pick the pocket of a lady on the Grand Parade, on the 29th of June last. • August 15, 1917 - James O'Driscoll, Monkstown, co. Cork, rescued from drowning a lad named Cade, aged 10, son of Mr. W.F. Cade, J.P. The boy toppled off the railway pier. Both were got ashore in an exhausted condition with the assistance of a long boat-hook.

• 1880 Jan 5 - Parnell's Noisy Hearers about a speech made to 7,000 people at Madison Square Garden by Mr. Charles Stewart Parnell.
  • "I will call your attention to one case which occured in the famine of 1846, because it gives a good illustration of landlord oppression in Ireland. Mr. Dillion then read from a book a brief history of one Mary Driscoll, of Cork, a widow, whose aged father lived with her. He died of starvation, and at the Coroner's inquest Mary Driscoll testified that her father had not tasted food for two days before he died, but that she had a stack of barley on her premises which would give them food for three months. Being asked how this came about, she replied that the landlord's agent 'had set his cross upon it for the rent.' She, however, did not think he was a hard man at all, because he had known she stole a little of the barley sometimes for their food, and had not reported her. Now this, said Mr. Dillon, is all sworn evidence, taken at the Coroner's inquest; and at this very time the landlord's were spending their rents in dissipation. [Groans and hisses.]"
• 1885 Dec 26 - Lost In A Burning House, article about which killed three children of Patrick Driscoll. Patrick had been in the country for two years and brought his family over last May.
  • Mr and Mrs. Driscoll severly burned.
  • John 17, Julia 14 and Mary Driscoll 7 killed in the fire.
  • Patsey 8 burned upon the left leg.
  • Daniel 9 and his cousin Michael Driscoll escaped unharmed.
  • Nelly 20 and Margaret 16 survived as they were not home at the time.

  • Combination in Cork
    At the Cork Assises, on Monday, Thomas SULLIVAN, John CAREY, Patrick LOONEY, and Denis DRISCOLL, wheelwrights, were convicted of an assault, arising out of combination, upon a fellow tradesman. The prisoners were all found guily, and sentenced to transportation for seven years.

  • The Cork Vitriol-Throwers
    At the Cork Assizes Bartholomew LONG was found guily of having on 3d September been present and abetting Daniel QUIN, in throwing upon Mr Abraham HARTY a corrosive liquid, with intent to do him some grievous bodily harm; an on Wednesday Mr Justice PERRIN sentenced Long and Edward DRISCOLL, who had been previously convicyed of the same offense, to be executed on 18th April.

  • Cutting A Man's Head Off With A Scythe
    The Skibbereen Eagle of Saturday has the following:- "Intelligence" has just reached us of a shocking murder committed this morning about eight o'clock near Mohina within a few miles of Skibbereen. It appears Denis DRISCOLL, a farmer, belonging to the above place, followed a man named Cornelius BRIEN and with a scythe severed the head from the body. there are numerous reports as to the cause which led to the murder, but it is confidently believed jealousy has a great deal to do wit it.

    At Cork Assizes yesterday, James DRISCOLL, a tinker, was sentenced to five years penal servitude for the manslaughter of Margaret COOTES.

The Times

• January 11, 1847 - State of the West Riding of Cork
  • John Driscoll was working on one of the public works on the 29th of December; on his return home he fell exhausted for want of food, and was found dead in the mountain of Glounlough on the following morning. His wife proved that he had eaten nothing for two days previous to his death, except a small quantity of boiled wheat, and that he frequently had a similar fast.
