The mtDNA is passed down from mother to both son and daughter unchanged. Referring to the above chart suppose your brick wall is your g-grandmother Old Lady DRISCOLL, at F7 in the chart. The mtDNA testing can help you identify her mother, your maternal gg-grandmother, at FF in the chart.

Now suppose Old Lady DRISCOLL had a sister and unknown to you her maiden name is Old Lady DOE. You submit a mtDNA sample and someone in the DOE surname project does the same.

Some two months after you submit your sample you are informed by the vendor that you and 'someone' from the DOE surname project match mtDNA. You then contact that someone, compare notes and learn that Old Lady DRISCOLL's maiden name is DOE plus whatever else that someone knows about her!
