In a bible held by John Ferguson of Australia reference is made to the birth of Thomas Ferguson in Mossowen or Mosstown, Co Cavan. Joseph Ferguson once held land in Mosstown, Co Westmeath:

"Joseph Ferguson did thereby grant convey unto the said Samuel Ferguson and Thomas James Smyth their heirs and assigns All those the part of the town and lands of Mosstown called or known by the name of Tinefeeragh otherwise Taughnaveragh containing Seventy five acres And also All that the part of the Town and lands of Mosstown called or known by the name of Cloneenroe otherwise Cloneen"

The same Thomas James Symth mentioned above sold land in Loughagar to Isaiah Ferguson in 1860.
There is reason to believe the Fergusons were in Westmeath some time for in the biography of his son William Jeremiah Ferguson it is stated that William is the "descendant of an old Westmeath family".
