Hazel Claire Hampton, the daughter of Finley and Lillie Winterowd, was born in Carmen, Idaho on Jan. 5, 1915 and died at her Boise home in the care of family March 16, 2006. Cremation is under the direction of Cloverdale Funeral Home. She was the fifth of eight children and attended a one-room schoolhouse in the North Fork area until moving to California. She completed her education there while living with older siblings. In 1937 in San Diego, she married Irvin Colby who died shortly after. She then married Beecher Bond who was killed in Saipan in W.W. II. During the late 30s and early 40s, she supervised a crew of men and women at an airplane manufacturing plant in San Diego. Allergies forced a move back to Idaho in 1942 and she worked at the old Walgreen's Soda Fountain in downtown Boise for fourteen years during which time she married Harvey Hampton. They later divorced. Quitting Walgreen's after back surgery, she took a few business classes while recuperating and went to work for an attorney's office. That contact led to working as a supervisor for the Ada County Clerk's office for 21 years. She retired in 1978 and headed out camping and traveling as often as possible. She loved to read and the day couldn't start until the crossword puzzle was done. She was a wonderful artist and her home was filled with the realist oil paintings that she couldn't part with. Hazel's health remained excellent until a stroke set her back shortly after turning 90. Up until then she was quite independent and active, doing her own housework, gardening and bowling up to four times a week at 20th Century with quite a good average. Hazel is survived by one sister, Alta Chaffin of Salmon; two daughters and a son; Ruth Reed (Huey), Irvin "Buzz" Colby (Alex) and Christine Bauer (Tony); eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Life's Door Hospice for all their tender care. Also many kisses to Hazel's granddaughter, Lilli Cussins, for her daily loving care these past few months. We are also grateful for the companionship in her later years of her friend, Bob Currier. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice. The family would like to invite all of Hazel's friends to an open house to be held on Sunday, April 2, 2006 from 2 to 5 p.m. at 7872 W. Holt Ct. in Boise to join in a celebration of her life.
