Tribute: Dr. Charles L. Whitcomb, 93, city school superintendent Mark Behan From teacher to principal to superintendent of schools, Dr. Charles L. Whitcomb served as a career educator in two states. "He was a dedicated public servant who was always concerned with the day-to-day education of his students," Dr. Whitcomb's son, Anthony L. Whitcomb, said. Dr. Whitcomb began his career as a high school math teacher in West Newbury and then Acton. He later became an elementary school principal in the Haverhill school system and was appointed superintendent of schools in the city in 1953. After leaving Haverhill, Dr. Whitcomb served as school superintendent in Newport, R.I., and Swampscott and completed his career as a professor of comparative education at the University of Rhode Island. After a short illness, Dr. Charles L. Whitcomb died Sunday, July 15, 2007, at the Scallop Shell Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Peace Dale, R.I. He was 93 and lived in Kingston, R.I. "My father loved working in Haverhill. He felt he accomplished more in Haverhill (as superintendent) than anywhere else and it was the most rewarding job he had," said Dr. Whitcomb's son, who noted that elementary schools were built during his father's tenure (1953-1961) and that his father had good relationship with the city's school committee. "The city fit his personality," Anthony L. Whitcomb said. Born in Merrimac in 1914, Dr. Charles L. Whitcomb was a son of the late George H. and Lorena B. (Blaisdell) Whitcomb. He graduated from Merrimac High School in 1932 and Bridgewater State College Teachers College in 1936. Dr. Whitcomb served as a gunnery officer with the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, he earned his master's of education from Harvard University and his doctorate from Boston University. Dr. Whitcomb was an avid chess player who would often play the game with his two sons when they were young. "It (playing chess) was a lot of fun a father and son thing," recalled Anthony L. Whitcomb. "We were all members of the Haverhill Chess Club and would go off and play there." Dr. Whitcomb enjoyed gardening and traveling. "That (traveling) started later in life and he and my mom went all over," Anthony L. Whitcomb said. Dr. Whitcomb traveled to all 50 states and more than 50 countries. After retiring, Dr. Whitcomb assisted at South County Hospital in Wakefield, R.I. and was a volunteer for Seniors Helping Others, driving for Friends in Service to Humanity. He was a member of numerous professional organizations including the National Education Association, Phi Beta Kappa and the American Association of School Administrators. Dr. Whitcomb is survived by his wife of 69 years, Phyllis (Colby) Whitcomb; two sons, Anthony L. and his wife Barbara C. (Mudar) Whitcomb of Kingston, N.H., and David C. and his wife Jean (Bringardener) Whitcomb of Madison, Wisc.; one daughter, Adrianna D. and her husband Geoff Hewings of Buckley, Ill. His fourth child, Frederic C. Whitcomb, predeceased him. He also leaves a brother, Robert Whitcomb of Merrimac; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Arrangements were by the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, Wakefield, R.I. A private ceremony and burial with close relatives and friends took place in the family lot in West Newbury.
