Helen Colby was born Helen Maria Linnea Pearson, on July 13, 1916, in Chicago, Illinois, to Ernest Pearson and Frida Nilsson Pearson, natives of Sweden. Her youth, with older brothers Harold and Walter, was spent in Chicago, on the Fox River, and in Minneapolis. A vacation spent in the Northwest and British Columbia convinced Helen that her future was on the West Coast. In 1940 Helen and her father drove Route 66 to California. The family settled in the Oakland area when her mother and oldest brother, Harold, followed. Oakland's Pier 5 was Helen's exciting and rewarding wartime workplace. In 1947, her love of opera led her to Ed Colby, a music librarian at Oakland Public Library. They were married in May 1947. Ed was soon appointed music librarian at Stanford University and the couple moved to Palo Alto. In 1958, Helen, Ed, with their two daughters, Lisa and Jeanne, moved to West San José where they remained nearly fifty years, raising their children, caring for elderly relatives, welcoming friends and family, and pursuing many interests and studies. Helen was preceded in death by her brothers, and, in September 2006, by her husband Edward. Helen is survived by her daughters Lisa Christiansen and Jeanne Colby, also by John Christiansen and Ken Lima, great grandniece Jennifer Clark, relatives in the Midwest, Northwest, and Sweden, and a host of feline friends. Her ashes will join Edward's at Evergreen Cemetery, Oakland. Arrangements were made by Neptune Society. "Doc" Pearson, 102, of Reise Terrace, Portsmouth, died Saturday, July 3, 2004, at home. He was the husband of the late Helen R. (Monosmith) Pearson. Born in Stratham, N.H., a son of the late Frank H. and Grace E. (Gowen) Pearson, he had lived in California, Massachusetts and New York, as well as in Dakar, Senegal, before moving to Portsmouth in 1993. Mr. Pearson had been a horticulturist for over 60 years. He had worked on seed research, and was a seed research associate at Cornell University, in Ithaca, N.Y. He had been a consultant to Bud Senegal in Dakar, developing vegetable crops for the Common Market while simultaneously working at Cornell. He had previously been associate director of seed research at Seed Research Specialists, in Hollister, Calif., and a plant breeder and head of seed research at the Eastern States Farmer's Exchange, Springfield, Mass. The valedictorian of the Exeter (N.H.) High School, Class of 1918, he received a bachelor's degree in 1923, and a master's degree in agriculture in 1925 from the University of New Hampshire. He later recieved a doctorate in horticulture from the University of California-Davis in 1928. He was a longtime member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He leaves three sons, Robert Pearson of Portland, Ore., Dr. David Pearson of Warwick and George Pearson of Mojave, Calif.; two daughters, Dorothy Ann Proctor of Portsmouth and Sandra Pearson Shlapak of Chatsworth, Calif.; a sister, Georgiana Pearson of Exeter; a grandchild, eight great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
