Leonard Judkins was descended from Job and Sarah ( ? ) Judkins who owned property in Boston on Washington Street near Summer Street from 1637 till their death when it passed to their oldest son Samuel. The descent was through Joel who was born 30 (7) 1643 Boston. After his marriage to Mary Bean, daughter of John and Hannah Lissen Bean, they lived in Exeter, N. H. In 1689 he was on of the signers to the petition of the New Hampshire settlers to the Governor of Massachusetts for aid against the Indians. It was his daughter Hannah, who married Ebenezer Webster, Great-grandparents of the well-known Daniel. Then the descent was through Samuel (1685/6-1741/2) who married Abigail Harriman (1684-1756), who lived in Kingston, N. H.; Joel (1712- ? ), who married Mehitable Elkins (1706- ? ), daughter of Moses and Ann Shaw Elkins, of Hampton, N. H.; Leonard (1741- ? ), married Sarah Cram, daughter of Betsy Rogers and -------- Cram; (they moved to Salisbury, N. H.); Leonard (1770- ? ) who married Sarah Colby (1763- ? ), daughter of Joseph and Sarah Thurlow Colby, About 1800 they moved to Deer Isle, Maine. Their son, Leonard (1808-1869), married Rosanna Robbins Ackley (1805-1890), daughter of Nathaniel and Betsy Colby Robbins; Samuel Webb Judkins, father of the subject of this memoir (1837/8-1930), married Adelia M. Crockett (1840-1931), daughter of Isaac and Hannah Allen Crockett of Vinal Haven, Maine.

During his early years, Mr. Judkins went to sea as a cabin boy, shipping with his father who was captain of a coastwise shipping service. In time he earned his first mate's papers. In 1889 he went to work for R. S. Margeson, Newburyport, Mass., in the furniture and carpet business. He later was employed by Thomas O'Callahan of Boston, Mass., where he became a carpet mechanic. After practicing his traded in many stores throughout the country, he went into business for himself in Utica, N. Y., under the name of Utica Floors Company, as a contractor doing installations of both carpet and installation. In 1935 he and Mr. George W. Dawes formed a corporation, Dawes & Judkins, Inc., to sell and install rugs, carpets, and linoleum at retail. He was president of the firm until 1948 when he retired.

Mr. Judkins served as Master of Utica Lodge, F. & A. M., No. 47, during 1920; and as Thrice-Potent Master of the Lodge of Perfection, A.A.S.R. for 1935. For nearly fifty years he had been a member and regular attendant of Central Methodist Church of Utica. For many years he served on its Official Board and its Board of Trustees. At the time of his death, he was an emeritus member of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Judkins also was an enthusiastic golfer and was a member of the Vally View Golf Club of Utica.

On 29 Aug. 1893, he married Alma Payson, daughter of Calvin B. and Harriet Watton Payson, She was a direct descendant of Governor Bradford of the Massachusetts Colony, There were two children of this union; Helen, who was born 23 Aug. 1894, and died 9 April 1901; and Philip, who was born in January 1896, and died with in a week. Mrs Judkins, who was born 21 Sept. 1869, died in May 1909. On 19 Jan 1910, he married Bessie Florence Johnstone, daughter of John James and Jessie (Porteous) Johnstone, of Castle Douglas, Scotland. Their daughter, Edith, was born 7 Oct 1910.

For several years prior to his death, Mr. Judkins and his daughter had been working on the Judkins family genealogy. The most recent of their activities was and attempt to trace Job Judkins back to England to corroborate family legend which relates that an ancestor of the family came into England with William the Conqueror. Miss Judkins hopes to continue this work.
