ANNIE MARGARET HANSEN & FAMILY
By Lilly W. Mellor

John Lewis Bosshardt married Annie Margaret Hansen in the Manti Temple. They had three children: Laura, born 19 July 1887, and died at the age of 14 from gall bladder troubles. John Henry, born 14 July 1889, he died from diphtheria when 1½ years old. Jennie, born 26 April 1891, who later married Thomas Francis Crowther.

John Bosshardt died of diphtheria in January, 1891, along with his young son John Henry. Brother-in-law Niels Hansen, then 19 years old also died of diphtheria. They all died within three weeks of each other. Annie was left a widow at the young age of 21. Jennie was born after her fathers death.

Annie lived on her farm with her Mother, Margarethe Jorgensen Hansen, and the young children for five years. The farm was inherited by her husband from his father's estate. There was a 2 room rock house, sheds and equipment for running the farm. The size of the farm was about 70 acres of the best field land and water rights on the Willow Creek.

After the death of her family, Annie and her Mother tried to take the bodies to Gunnison and bury them. The people of Gunnison would not let them take the bodies through town to the cemetery, because of the fear of diphtheria. The women had to return to Axtell with their loved ones. They buried the bodies on government land. Annie later bought 40 acres from the government which included the burial site. The place where she buried her family is now the Axtell Cemetery. She was going to donate the land to the Church free of dept and encumbrance, along with suitable land. She didn't get to do this before she died. Through the inheritance it became the property of her second husband, Edwin Thomas Watts, Jr. of Springville, Utah. He latter had the grave sites surveyed into lots and sold them to the individuals who had buried there dead there. This was done against Annie's wishes.

Margaret lived a widow for 5 years and then made her 2nd marriage, a civil one, to Edwin Thomas Watts, Jr.. He had come down to these parts to trap and work. Being a man of industry and finding work plentiful, he stayed in Axtell working for Josiale Jensen who then owned what is now, the Saren Anderson farm west of Axtell along the Sevier River. He became acquainted with Annie Margaret at this time. They both were 25 year old when they were married. They had three daughters: Emma (Duffin), born 10 March 1895; Lilly (Mellor), born 15 November 1897; Annie Margaret (Hansen), born 21 September 1899.

This was a good marriage and they were happy together. Margaret not alwasys being well died after only five years of marriage. This left Edwin with three small girls to raise. Emma just 3 years old; Lilly not quite 2 years old; Annie Margaret was just one month old the day her mother was buried. Edwin always took the children with him after the death of his wife.

See Edwin Thomas Watts, Jr Family for more history after Margaret's death.

HANS CHRISTIAN HANSEN
Born: 13 December 1834
Died: 17 March 1919

Compiled by Laura Duffin Glenn from a letter
to my mother Emma Watts Duffin from Matilda
Hansen Whitlock, dated 10 June 1963 and from
History of Danish Mission, P. 262 and P. 269.

Hans Christian Hanssen was born 13 December 1834 in Thisted, Thisted, Denmark. His father was Niels Christian Hansen, and his mother was Ane Jensen, she died in 1836 befor Hans immigrated to Utah.

He was the youngest of four full brothers and sisters. His brothers and sisters died in 1832, 1834 and 1838. His father married his mother's sister 2 December 1836 and they had 7 more children.

Baptized into the LDS Church February 17, 1861 at Thisted, Denmark by Elder O. O'Mar. He immigrated to America in 1863 with his fiancee at the time. She died aboard ship and was buried at sea. Margrethe Jorgensen was also traveling on the same ship.

While crossing the plains they came upon a company of immigrants that had been attacked by Indians and 24 of their men had been killed. That devastated company then hired 24 Mormon men as teamsters to drive horses to California. Hans was one of the men.

After returning to Salt Lake City he left for Gunnison, where his future wife, Margrethe Jorgensen had gone. They were married March 17, 1864. They were later sealed in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City. Hans and Margarethe took out their endowments on 16 November 1869, in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City, Utah. Hans did his fathers endowments in the St. George Temple.

Hans became a freighter. He staked a claim by Redmond, on a salt lick and boiled salt water to get table salt. He then hauled the salt as far south as St. George and then hauled molasses and sorghaum back.

Hans departed for a mission to Denmark December 15, 1881. While in Denmark he met and married, Julian Ane Willumsen and brought three children with him when he returned from his mission. The children's names were: Carry, Stena and Scena. Two more children were born in Utah, Mary and Jennie.

Hans legal wife, Margrethe, not wanting to live in polygamy left him, never to live in the same house with Hans. Then the law was changed (outlawing polygamy) and this set his second wife, Julian, free. Hans then lived alone until he died.

Hans apparently then lived alone until his death in Fairview. His home in Gunnison burned down when he was 78 years old. All his records were destroyed and the money he had been saving for his burial, lost. He was said to have hidden away several hundred dollars in gold, but it was never found. He then gave his three lots in Gunnison to the County of Sanpete and lived the balance of his life in the County Rest Home at Fariview, Utah.

Hans and his wife Margrethe died within three weeks of each other. She is buried in Axtell, Sanpete County, Utah.
