Born in Boothbay Harbor October 9, 1906, in the same home he died in, he was the son of Miles Frindley Barter and Flora Belle Forbes Barter. He graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in 1926. He worked in the plumbing and heating business most of his life. He held a master plumber's license, a master oil burner license and a journeyman electrician's license. Along with working with his father in this business for many years before World War II, he was a foreman of the pipefitting shop at Goudy & Stevens Shipyard in East Boothbay, just prior to entering the Army. Following the war he worked for Cliff Reny and Walbridge Brothers in Boothbay Harbor until he semi retired in 1968. He then went lobstering for a few years which he enjoyed very much until his full retirement. He was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis Sherman Colby Barter, in early 1964. They were married in 1941. Mr. Barter was drafted into World War II on June 4, 1941 at the age of 34 years, 8 months. Along with various U.S. assignments, he was deployed to the European Theater as a Combat Military Policeman with the U.S. 5th Army. He arrived in Algiers, North Africa and soon left Bizerte, North Africa for Sicily and Naples, Italy and eventually to the combat zone near Cassino Monastery. He later served at Fort Devens, Mass., and in Augusta and Houlton where he was assigned as 1st Sergeant of the German POW camp at that location. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army on September 26, 1945 just 13 days short of his 40th birthday. He served for 4 years, 3 months, and 22 days and was very proud of it. Like most soldiers who endure and sacrificed, he never talked about it unless someone asked first or it was appropriate to do so. He enjoyed and respected the sea, the Maine woods and most all that both had to offer. He spent many hours maintaining and sowing the harvest from his vegetable gardens and keeping his lawns looking nice. He had fun tinkering in the workshop next to his house using many of the same tools his father had used to support his family with in the early 1900s. He also enjoyed working with Barbara Rumsey of the Boothbay Region Historical Society where he contributed what he could to their historical memory banks. He was an avid reader in his later years. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias, the American Legion, the Boothbay Region Historical Society, the Boothbay Region Fish and Game, the Sportsmans Alliance of Maine, the National Rifle Association and the Maine Pistol Association. Survivors include four children, a stepson Richard Morrill Colby and his wife Janice Farnham Colby of Woodridge, Va.; a son, Miles Neil Barter and his wife Sharon Webb Barter of Wiscasset; two daughters, Janet Barter Tilton and her husband C. Alan Tilton of Boothbay Harbor and Nancy Barter Brown and her husband Kenneth Brown of Boothbay; ten grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Visiting hours were held March 19 at the Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay with an American Legion service at 7 p.m. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Oceanview Cemetery in Boothbay. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the Boothbay Region Historical Society, P.O. 272, Boothbay Harbor 04538-0272.
