Colby Brothers, livery, sale and feed stables. – W. H. H. and Charles Colby, the members of this firm, are pioneers in this business in Fort Dodge, coming here in 1870. They have the largest stables in the county, fronting sixty-two feet on the public square and running back 140 feet to Williams street. Their stock comprises thirty or forty driving horses, and carriages of all descriptions. They are also the proprietors of Colby's Transfer ‘Bus and Hack Line. They are honorable business men, and have acquired a large trade in this city. The Colby brothers are natives of the Green Mountain State. W. H. H. was born in Barton County. He first engaged in the livery business in New Lisbon, Wisconsin, coming thence to Fort Dodge. Charles was born in Burke, and after reaching manhood went to Franklin County, Massachusetts, where he carried on a circular saw-mill and chair factory, until his removal to Iowa. IRVING COLBY The many friends of Prof. W. Irving COLBY will be shocked to learn of his sudden death at the Flower Hospital, Manhattan, on June 5. Prof. COLBY had been visiting in Providence, and while there did not enjoy the best of health. Desiring to consult a specialist he came to New York accompanied by his son-in-law. Before reaching the city, Prof. COLBY's condition became so serious that on arriving at the Grand Central Station, an ambulance was summoned and he was taken to the hospital where he died a few hours later. The immediate cause of his death was acute indigestion. Prof. COLBY was well known in nearly all the large cities of this country as an instructor in the German language, which he began teaching in 1883. He was especially well known in Brooklyn, where he had during the past twelve years taught many classes, his pupils numbering over two thousand. He was author of several German textbooks, among which were "Der Lehrer" and "Der Leitstern" Prof. COLBY was a member of Kismet Temple, Order of the Mystic Shrine, Brooklyn, and of Central City Commandery, No. 25, K. T. of Syracuse. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. FD BEAGLE, of Albany, and Mrs. Walter F. KINGSLEY, of Providence, R.I., and by three grandchildren. The interment took place at Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse, on June 8. W. Irving COLBY was a man of lovable nature, noble impulses and high aims, from boyhood he could be thoroughly depended upon. He lived for his friends and his family. He had a kind word for every one and few men were as free from selfishness as was he. Always thoughtful of others, he delighted in doing kind deeds, and his life was one delightful service. He had hosts of loyal friends who will never cease to mourn the sudden departure of the strong, gracious, noble spirit that lived and breathed in Will Irving COLBY. They had seven children, four girls and three boys. They lived in Canada for a while and in 1833 they moved their family to Michigan from New York state. They first located in Monroe County. Then they moved to Lowell Michigan where they purchased a mill and village property. They finally settled east of Ypsilanti where he kept a hotel called "The Colby House". This was the first hotel located on the old Indian trail (Michigan Ave.) two miles east of Ypsilanti between Detroit and Ypsilanti. The Colby House was erected by Z. Bowen in 1828 and at one time was the most pretentious tavern between Ypsilanti and Detroit. It was afterward conducted by William Colby, and purchased from him by E. D. Lay, and finally sold to a Mr. Wiard. They also had a 80 acre farm on Rawsonville Road near Ypsilanti, Michigan. When they first settled on the farm, the entire area was a mass of forest. In those days Indians were often seen. Deer and turkeys were plentiful. Prairie schooners furnished the means of conveyance, but a great deal of hauling was done by oxen. The old farm is currently part of Willow Run Airport and the General Motors plant. William L. Colby died on his farm near Ypsilanti, Michigan. William and Ann are buried in Spencers Cemetery, Washtenaw Co., Michigan. The headstones were removed long ago and replaced with a single monument. His parents are William Colby and Eleanor Lord. His father and grandfather Philbrick Colby were both in the Revolutionary War. In 1833 they came from New York state to Michigan and located in Monroe Co. Then they moved to Lowell Michigan where they purchased a mill and village property. They finally settled east of Ypsilanti where he kept a hotel called "The Colby House" for 4 or 5 years.
