========================================================

He died on 20 OCT 1914 at Marquette, Hamilton County, Nebraska.
The Aurora Republican, Oct. 29, 1914.
The funeral services of Spencer Colby were held from the United Brethren Church in Marquette at 1 p.m. last Thursday and followed a short service at the house. The services were in charge of Rev. A. R. Caldwell. The church was crowed with those of the community and from other towns who assembled to pay their last respects to one who had been a friend to all and was respected by all who knew him. The floral emblems which were heaped upon the casket bespoke the feelings of regard entertained by the donors. The funeral services were attended by the few remaining members of Putnam post. G. A. R. of which the deceased was a member, who assembled at the hall and marched as an escort in a body, Mr. Colby had been so long identified with the history of Marquette that he had become one of its oldest, remaining citizens, and out of respect the business houses closed during the service. Rev. Caldwell commented upon the life of this good man and in a message founded on the gospel pointed others to the state of preparation which was to manifest in the manner in which Mr. Colby had lived and died. Several selected songs were sung by the choir which were a fitting part of the service. the following obituary was read:

Spencer Colby was born at Emden, Maine, April 12 1835, and departed from this life at Marquette October 20, 1914, aged 70 years 6 months and 8 days. He was united in marriage to Josephine Churchill April 7, 1855, at Moose River, Maine. To this union were born ten children, seven of whom are living. He came to York County, Nebraska, in April, 1883, and later to Hamilton County, first settling on a farm east of town and later removing to Marquette, where he has since made his home. His wife died February 21, 1907, and since that time he has made his home with his son, W. W. Colby, where he was at the time of his death. He was converted in the winter of 1871 and joined the United Brethren Church, of which he was still a member at the date of his death, coring a period of 41 years. He was a devoted student of scriptures and understood the Bible better than the average man. He enlisted in the Civil War in March, 1865, and served until the close of the War.

He leaves to mourn his loss four sons, Ansel Colby of Pennsylvania; W. W. Colby of Marquette; Asa Colby of Aurora; William Colby of Aurora; and three daughters, Mrs. Mary Litzenberger, of Callaway; Mrs. Alice Solt of Callaway; and Mrs. Myra Holderman of Stapelton. There is also a brother, James Colby residing at Moose River, Maine. With few exceptions the immediate relatives were present at the funeral, as were also a number of more distant relatives present from York, Polk, Bradshaw, Aurora and Central City. Interment was made in the Richland Cemetery.
