Simon had simply a common-school education; labored on his father's farm till his majority, when he bought the farm in South Weare and there resided till his decease. He was a man of fine personal appearance, of commanding presence, was a good conversationalist, and a fair public speaker. He was popular with his townsmen, and received much public office at their hands. They elected him moderator of the annual town-meeting eleven time; selectman eight years, and he served as representative to the General Court six sessions. He was for seven years, 1833-1840, one of the side judges of the court of common pleas, his duties being nearly the same as those performed by the county commissioners at the present time. He was elected to the New Hampshire senate in 1842 and 1843. In politics he was a democrat, was a good debater, and often went with Hon. John L. Hadley, to Clinton Grove lyceum, to discuss political questions with Moses A. Cartland, Hon. William H. Gove and others. He took a great interest in the prosperity of his town, was often appointed agent for the transaction of its business, and was one of the committee of three to build the present town-house. For many years he was the clerk of the Freewill Baptist church, and was afterwards a member of the Universalist society. Simon died of heart disease. He attended court at Amherst that day, came home, said he was unwell, lay down on the bed, and in a few minutes expired. Sjon Kaio Colby 1941 - 2008 Dad was prepared to die, and did so at home on February 2, 2008 as a result of renal failure due to prostate cancer. He was born on May 15, 1941 to Clint and Allie Colby in Richfield, Utah. He served his country in the Navy as a young man, and spent most of his working life driving and dispatching trucks, and helping with fiberglass manufacture. After retirement, he volunteered at Antelope Island, and worked as a hospice volunteer, both of which he loved doing very much. Dad loved his mother's cooking, four-wheeling, reading, woodworking, and listening to the fiddle. He was an intelligent conversationalist, and a great story teller. We enjoyed his taking us fishing and hunting when we were young. Dad taught us many lessons, including to trust those who love you, to forgive rather than to resent, to work hard, and to keep learning. We often found him reading books, the newspaper, and internet articles; and working in his wood shop or at his jewelry bench. We loved him, and he loved us. He was a good example. While we were still young, he had his tattoo removed, he quit smoking, and he even sold his Harley-Davidson to help finance a son on a mission. Some of his memorable phrases were to "Quit your janglin'," "Mind your manners," "Remember who you are," "Have something to sell," "This comes from Sjon's Book of Useless Information," "neat & wonderful," "handsome devil," and "Do things in the light." We thank so much all of Dad's friends. They were very important to him. He loved just being with them, and visiting and traveling with them. Your names were frequently mentioned at home. We also thank so much the caring staff at the Intermountain Medical Center, IHC Hospice Care, SereniCare, and our neighbors. Your kindness will always be appreciated and never be forgotten. He is survived by his wife Julie, sons Shawn and Shane, daughter Jenavee (Rick) Smith, grandson Jachin Smith; and siblings Lee (Dorene), Cloyd, Chett (Carolyn), Micala (Deno Blau) Jensen, Rusty (Sherry), and Sharon Ross. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and older brother Zane. As per his wishes, we will have "a party on a Saturday." An open house will take place on Saturday, February 9, from 1 - 3 p.m. at the South Davis Recreation Center, 550 N 200 W, Bountiful, UT (801-298-6220). He had Social Security Number 529-48-5574 .
