She was surrounded by friends and family during her final days. She was born July 1, 1960, in Bar Harbor, the daughter of Royal "Tinker" Emerson and Gaile (Bunker) Colby of Great Cranberry Isle. Rhonda graduated from Mount Desert Island High School as well as from the Katharine Gibbs School in Boston after receiving a degree as a legal secretary. She worked for Irving Oil Corp. as an accounts payable clerk until her health failed her. Her passion was being with her husband of 20 years and her two children, Shawn Douglas and Michael Emerson. Rhonda loved walking, being near the ocean, reading and traveling. In addition to her husband and two children, Rhonda is survived by her grandmother, Ruth Sylvester Stanley; her mother, Gaile; two sisters, Eileen Colby Richards of Ellsworth, Rénna Susan Colby of Great Cranberry Isle; two brothers and their wives, Lyndon Emerson Colby and Emily of Great Cranberry Isle, Blair Emery Colby and Trasea of Barnstead, N.H.; several nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to meet with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, with the Rev. Ted Hoskins presiding. In lieu of flowers, Rhonda preferred contributions be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Regional Office, 311 Hanover St., Manchester, N.H. 03104. Rhonda's family celebrates the fact that she accepted Christ. A special thank you to all the doctors and staff at Eastern Maine Medical Center for all the care they've given to Rhonda through the years. Rick was born on May 30, 1958 in Laconia, NH, the son of Richard C. and the late Priscilla (Brown) Colby. He attended the Laconia schools and in 1977 graduated from Laconia High School. He then attended the University of New Hampshire. Rick worked for Gunstock Ski Area, the N. H. Electric Cooperative, U.P. S., Linens 'n Things and in recent years, while living in Florida, he worked at Bed, Bath & Beyond. He had lived in Florida for the past fourteen years. Rick enjoyed life. In his youth, he played Little League baseball, participated in Boy Scouts and sang with the Colby Trio. He played football in high school and played the trumpet in the band. He enjoyed water skiing and snow skiing and coached a Little League team. He liked to cook, spend time with family, watch the Patriots, ride roller coasters and traveling. One of his favorite places to visit was Disney World. We will miss his large presence in our lives, his thoughtfulness, friendliness and that happy, contagious laugh. Survivors include his loving and devoted fiancée, Carol Nichols, and her two sons, David and Samuel Nichols, of Naples, Florida; his father, Richard C. Colby, of Laconia, NH; a sister, Catherine Lines, and her husband, Paul, of Gilmanton I. W., NH; a brother, Jeffrey, and his wife, Kathleen, of West Roxbury, MA; a niece and nephews, whom he enjoyed spending time with, Carolyn, Tim, Chris and Derek. He was predeceased by his mother, Priscilla Colby, in 1996 and by a brother, Christopher R. Colby, in 1963. There will be no calling hours. He was born in Plattsburgh on Feb. 9, 1946, and raised in AuSable Forks, the son of Richard G. and Dora (Hart) Colby. He graduated from AuSable Forks High School in 1963 and then joined the U.S. Marines in 1964 and went to the Paris Island Boot Camp and Camp Le Jeune for advanced infantry training and naval flight school in Pensacola, Fla. He served from 1966 to 1967 in the Vietnam War, where Captain Colby piloted helicopters and served in the Medivac Unit, flying combat and reconnaissance missions. He received 37 air medals during his tour of duty, including the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. Richard married his wife, Katherine Anne Sheffield, known as K, on Jan. 6, 1968, which was the happiest day of his life. In 1970, after returning home, he piloted a rescue helicopter, pulling several crewmen of a stricken fishing trawler out of the gale-swept Atlantic; for this he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, sixth highest combat decoration. In 1970 he went into industry as a civilian and a plant manager for companies in Connecticut and New York, prior to becoming disabled. He is survived by his wife Katherine; and his mother, Dora N. (Hart) Colby; the following brothers and sisters and in-laws, Joseph and Dorothy Colby of Clintonville, Leonard and Ruth Colby of Kentucky, Francis and Jeannie Colby, Brian and Lisa Colby, Glen and Yvonne Colby, Claude and Christine Barse, all of Morristown, Norma and Kenneth Joy of AuSable Forks, Amy and Chester Shalton of Jay, Patti and Dan Recor of Schenectady, Brenda Ano and Greg Wright of AuSable Forks, Scott Ano of AuSable Forks, Cindy and Len Muir of Utica, Brenda and Andrew Paquin, Linda Bashaw and Gerald La Duke, Lawrence J. Sheffield Jr., all of Schenectady, Mary Jane Robinson of Florida; and many loved nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his father and two brothers, Keith and Bradford Colby.
