From the Beloit Free Press, Rock Co., WI.
Thursday, July 16, 1891
"Death of Nathan Colby
Mr. Nathan D. Colby died Sunday afternoon at his residence on South Race street of a stomach trouble which had for many days threatened his life. He was in his eighty-first year of his age, and was not only one of the oldest citizen of Beloit, but was one of the early settlers, having cast his lot in this city in 1847. He was a man of generous and kindly traits of character and esteemed by all who knew him. He was always greatly interested in the public affairs of the city and watched the growth of the town with keen enjoyment. He was one of the country's most loyal Republicans and one of the comforts of his life was in seeing his (unreadable word) sons marching under the banner of his party.
He was born in Enden, Somerset county, Maine, where he spent the younger part of his life, and lived about a year at Fall River, Mass., before coming to the Badger State. Of his seven children, six survive him, and will be present at the funeral; they are Charles A. Colby, of Clinton; William A, of Burlington, editor of the Burlington Free Press and post master; Mrs. Ida J. McKee, of Beloit; Nate L., of Pecatonica, editor of the Pecatonica News, and Frank L. of Pecatonica. The sons and Mrs. McKee's husband will officiate at the burial. The deceased's first wife died a few years ago and he since married again."

Later entry, same day, same paper:
"The funeral was held Tuesday from the Methodist church, Rev. G. W. White officiating. Besides the children and widow, there was present at the service, Mr. P.H. Colby, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, brother of the deceased and only surviving member of thirteen children."

Nate L. Colby. The Pecatonica News is a bright and newsy weekly, and has aided in no small way in promoting the interest of the village where it is published. It is a successful representative of the people of the place where it is located, and its value in the community cannot be estimated. Tireless in its defense of the right, and fearless in its denunciation of the evils of the age, it has won an enviable reputation among the best people of the county, and its popularity is proved by a constantly increasing subscription list.

The editor and publisher of this paper was born in Beloit, Wis., December 20, 1854, the son of Nathan D. and Sybil W. (Pease) Colby. The father, who was born in Emden, Somerset County, ME., October 1, 1810, came west to Wisconsin July 12, 1847, where he followed the trade of a miller for a time, and later took contracts for moving buildings. He lived retired for some time prior to his decease, which occurred July 12, 1891. He was a brave defender of his country during times of peril; politically, was a Republican, and in the various county offices which he held was distinguished for efficiency and faithful discharge of duties. He was one of seven children born to Eben Colby, who was born and married in and was a life-long resident of Maine.

The mother of our subject, known in maidenhood as Sybil W. Pease, was born in South Norridgewock, ME, September 11, 1818, and died in Beloit, Wis., December 17, 1881. Her marriage, which was solemnized in her native place in 1844, was blessed by the birth of five children, four sons and one daughter. She was a cheerful helpmate to her husband, whom she aided in all his enterprises and cheered with her sympathy. Obliged for years after her marriage to use the strictest economy in regulating the household expenses, it was in no small degree due to her frugality and management that prosperity afterward rewarded their efforts.

In his youth our subject learned the trade of a printer in a printing establishment at Beloit, Wis., and gained a good education in the schools of his native city. In 1870, he went to Milwaukee, where he became a compositor in the office of the Sentinel, but the following year removed to Davis, Ill., and took charge of a newspaper there. A few months after locating there, he purchased and removed the plant to Pecatonica, and in partnership with his brother, William A., established the News. In 1880, he bought his brother's interest, and has since conducted the paper with marked success.

September 15, 1880, Mr. Colby was married at Freeport, Ill., to Miss Ella M. Smith, who was born in Stephenson County, this State, the daughter of Gilbert F. and Helen M. (Shaw) Smith. They are the parents of three children, namely; Gilbert F., born July 27, 1881; Claude A., July 19, 1883 and Smith W., May 15, 1887. The religious home of the family is in the Methodist Episcopal Church, and Mr. Colby is a member of the Official Board. Politically, he is a Republican and has filled various positions of trust, serving as Township Clerk for five years, member of the Board of Education and President of the Republican Club.

In his social connections, he is identified with the A. W. Rawson Lodge, F. & A. M; the Eureka Camp M. W. A., Monitor Garrison No. 19, Knights of the Globe, and was formerly connected with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He is chief of the Fire Department, President of the Electric Light plant, and otherwise identified with one of the most progressive measures for the upbuilding of the community.
