Mr. Colby served in the U.S. Army as a cook and military policeman in Germany during World War II and was assigned to guard German war prisoners at the Nuremburg trials after the war. He worked as a plumber's apprentice with Hammerstrom and Smith and as a maintenance man at Bonnie Oaks Resort, both in Fairlee. He later ran his own plumbing and heating company and was operator of the Fairlee water system. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, an associate member of the Lake Morey Protective Association, the Mt. Cube lodge #10 in Orford, N.H., was former chief, until his retirement in 1983, and 35 year member of the Fairlee Fire Department. Mr. Colby was born Aug. 11, 1924, in Manchester, son of the late George and Corabelle (Whitcher) Colby. At age 6, his family moved to Litchfield, where he resided until moving to Manchester in 2001. He was the widower of Patricia Mason Colby, who died in 1990. Mr. Colby retired in 1983, after 33 years as Hillsborough County Extension agent for the University of New Hampshire and the Department of Agriculture. He was involved in reducing pesticide use, encouraging orchard owners to switch from full sized fruit trees to more productive dwarf varieties, and planting new varieties of blueberries, strawberries and vegetables. For many years he wrote a home gardeners column, which appeared in four states and the local newspapers. He also hosted a call-in agricultural program on local radio in the 1960s and '70s. Mr. Colby was a member of the Manchester Exchange Club, the Litchfield Swingers Square Dance Club, Vegetable Growers for which he served as secretary, Fruit Growers, New Hampshire Farm Bureau, New Hampshire Archaeological Association, and the National Association of Federal Employees. Throughout his life, he collected more than 300 Indian artifacts from the farming areas along the Merrimack River. These items were donated to the Manchester Historical Association in 2001. He served in the Navy. Mr. Colby attended Litchfield schools and graduated from Manchester High School Central in 1942. He attended the University of New Hampshire, graduating in 1952 with a degree in agronomy. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a son, Michael Colby in 1949. Survivors include a daughter, Karen Fleming of Lake Placid, N.Y.; a son, Colin Colby of Webster; four grandchildren, and longtime companion Geraldine Thomas.
