Tiskiliva, Dec 22, 1878

Dear much loved cousins and all:
Absent but not forgotten cousins as I have to stay home from meeting on account of hard cold. I have some cough and my throat is sore but I hope that it will be better in a few days, the rest of the family is well as usual. Our son has gone to meeting afoot. I hope this will find you all well.
We are having quite a winter. Snow is about two feet deep and the coldest that it has been since we have been here, and the most snow. I had the fever in August but keep to work since I got better.
I had a letter from my sister last night. She is as usual. Her son lives with her, has two children, one a girl five years old and a boy born last July. I sent her a piece of your dress, half of that large square, black and white. I think it is awful pretty, so does she.
Sister Sylvia's address is Sylvia C. Sanborn, Henniker, New Hampshire. Oh, how glad we would be to see you all. I will try to get our likeness when it comes warm weather. You don't know how glad I was to see cousin Caroline and should have been glad to have gone out to see you with her. I remember Uncle, your father, well and remember of mother telling me about him. She said when I was six or seven months old I took cold and your father came over and stayed all night. He slep up stairs and awoke in the night, he spoke and said Lydia was better for he could not hear her breathe. I remember your Uncle Isaac, Margaret and Mary well but did not know where they went, and remember your father and mother and your sister Sally, and Daniel was small, and one younger was Samuel next to Daniel. I want to see your children. But if we never meet on earth may we meet on that shining shore.
One by one the heavy laden
sinks beneath the noontide sun
And the hardy pilgrims welcome
Evening shadows as they come
One by one with sins forgiven
May we stand upon that shore
Waiting until the angel boatmen
Takes the helm and guides us o'er
And the white robed angel boatman
Lands us in the shining shore.

Jan 2, 1879
Dear Cousins, I wish you all a happy New Year. It is awful cold today, Mercury 26 below zero. I don't know but you would like to know who your father's grandmother was on his father's side: she was Elizabeth Rogers, the fifth generation from John Rogers that was burnt at Smithfield, England. One of his grandsons, Rev. Nathaniel Rogers came to New England 1636 and settled at Ipswich, Massachusetts where he died leaving one son, John, who was pres of Harvard College.
He died 1699 leaving a number of children whose descendants are scattered over New England. Hundreds and perhaps thousands have read the account of the martyrdom of the Rev. John Rogers and weep at the recital of his sufferings and painful death without knowing that in their veins flowed the blood of him who was the first victim of that noble aray of martyrs who suffered during the reign of the cruel and bigoted Queen Mary.
Dear cousin I have written this so you might know who your ancestors were if you never heard your father tell. I will send you a piece of my dress I had in New Hampshire, I don't remember sending any of it to you. I wish I had gone to see you when cousin Caroline went. We should be glad to see you.
From your cousin, Lydia B. Colby
Mon. 6. P.S. We all send much love to all. Remember me to your family and cousin Charles. It remains cold, write soon. You will think, I have been a long time writing but is has been so cold though it is warmer this morning. We are all so as to be about but some colds.
