Hampshire East Dunbarton Cemetery.
Jonathan Colby, the youngest child of Abraham and Elizabeth, was born February 13, 1762. He was only six years old when the family emigrated to Bow. On arriving at his majority he married Martha Alexander born Nov 6, 1760, a daughter of Samuel Alexander, an early settler on the river road in Bow. The older brothers being located on their respective lots, it devolved on Jonathan to care for his aged parents in their declining years, and to inherit the homestead. Soon after the death of his father the house was superseded by a two story, single house, a few rods north of the old one, which crippled his resources and, having a large family, he was obliged to struggle to provide for their necessities. The new house was built about 1804. After his decease in 1831, the house was sold to parties in Concord, and Silas Call moved it, on wheels, to the corner of State and Washington Streets, where, with an addition, it may now be seen in fair condition, in 1894. Jonathan died July 8, 1831. His widow went to live with his brother, Thomas, where she died October 28, 1844. SOURCES: (1) "The Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury Massachusetts" by David W. He died on 16 JAN 1898 at Plainview, Wabasha County, Minnesota. Colby, Jonathan, who left behind him an honored memory as one of the hardy pioneers of southeast Minnesota, was born in Corinth, Orange County, Vermont, September 4, 1809. The first 46 years of his life were spent in his native state, and in 1831 he was there married to Malinda Pratt, who died in 1854. Of that union five children were born, of whom Mrs. John Q. Richardson is living. Mr. Colby continued his residence in Vermont for a year after the death of his wife, and then he and his son, L. D. Colby, joined the throng of gold seekers on the way to California, where for two years they were engaged in mining. They then returned to Vermont, remained there a year, and in 1858 came to Minnesota, stopping at Elgin until the following spring. Jonathan Colby then took a claim in Whitewater Township, Winona County the farm later owned by David McCarty but three years later moved to a farm a few miles southeast of Plainview, in Plainview Township, Wabasha County. In 1859 he married his second wife, Azubah Melendy, and until 1897, a period of 37 years, was actively engaged in looking after his farm, being recognized as a practical and successful agriculturist, and an excellent man and citizen. His health finally began to fail, and for a year before his death he was obliged to leave business affairs to the care of his wife. On January 16, 1898, he passed away, deeply mourned by his family, friends, and fellow citizens. Before leaving his native state he had connected himself with the Freewill Baptist church, and had remained faithful to its teachings. He was a man of good principle, good business judgments, and had bettered the world by his having lived. Parents: Jonathan COLBY and Betsey BERRY. Spouse: Malinda PRATT. Children were: Eleanor COLBY, Judith COLBY, Ephraim COLBY, Hannah COLBY, Joseph COLBY, Ruth COLBY, David COLBY. Joseph COLBY was born on 1 DEC 1740 in Amesbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. He died on 6 APR 1826 at Deer Isle, Hancock County, Maine. He was a cordwainer. Joseph was a "corwainer" and they both owned the covenant in the Kingston Church, May 5, 1763. His first three children were born while residing in Kingston, then they emigrated to what is now the Stonington Precinct of Deer Isle, Maine. A list of early settlers at Deer Isle has been perseved, entitled "the Number of Inhabitants of Deer Island and when settled on that lsland", which Joseph Colbe, 1765" Documents have been found in many instances which have proven many dates on this list to be incorrect. The fact that Joseph's third chid Joseph, was baptized in Newbury, Mass. March 30, 1766 might indicate that Joseph and his wife left Kingston, N.H. for Newbury, about 1765, either before or after their son was baptized in 1766, then moved permanently to Deer Isle. The 1800 Census of Deer Isle also states that Joseph emigrated to Deer Isle from Newbury. Depositions in the "Kent Claim" shows Joseph came here in 1768. The first church record book kept by Rev. Peter Powere, 1785-6, shows that Joseph was a signer of the "Confession of Faith" and "Church Covenant" his name also appears on the petitions sent early from Deer Isle to the General Court at Mass., 1784/5. etc. Historian Hosmer says Joseph Colby, "he settled upon the lost of land lying south of and adjoinging that of Captain Belcher Tyler. He had a two hundred acre lot set off to him, which wa with the limits of the Kent Claim. In the suit at law, I have understood that he claimed, in addition to his right as an early settler, That Kent had contracted to sell him the land, and in payment he was to perform a cetain amount of labor upon the mill built by Kent and upon the dam, which he performed; but upon what ground he held the land we do not know. He was a native of Newbury, Mass., or some place in that vicinity and was born in 1744 - - and his son Thomas, born in 1768, was the first child born of white parents in that part of town. "The Kent Claim" as it was called, was a subject of litigation for several years. It covered the land settled by Joseph Colby, the lawsuit being prolonged for several years in the Courts of Lincoln County. Mr Colby had to frequently attend court, and, as the practice was then, the jurors were chosen and could serve as often as they would return, and he was, while his case was in court, a juryman, as it enabled him to meet his expenses of travel to and from the shire-town, which was Pownalborough, near the towns of Dreseden and Wiscasset". The final divison between the Colby claim on the south and the Kent Claim on the north, can best be seen in the Peters survey map where one will find, leading from the peak of a cove in Southwest Harbor, a line that Peters marked S. 67 30" west separating Belcjer Tyler on the north from Joseph Colby on the south, same end in Elisha Dunham (20) lot. Joseph Colby, Sr. was a soldier in the Revolutionary War having enlisted August 3, 1779, as a private in Captain Nathaniel Fale's Co. service 13 days, company marched to Majorbagaduce by order of General Lowell; Discharged August 15, 1779. Children were: Joseph COLBY, Sarah COLBY, Governor Anthony COLBY, Judith COLBY. Joseph COLBY was baptized on 30 MAR 1766 in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. He was born in 1766 in Kingston, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. He has Ancestral File Number 1TTG-RDP. Jospeh Colby was baptized at the 1st Congo Church in Newbury, March 30, 1766. He married Eunice Thurlow, born in Newbury, Mass. on January 13, 1772, a sister of old Sire (Mill) David Thurlow of Crotch Island. Joseph was a farmer, millwright, shipbuilder and carpenter. He and his brother Thomas and his brother-in-law, David Thurlow, built a mill at the mouth of the pond or crotch on Crotch Island where they sawed lumber for houses and vessels. They built several large vessels there. One was the old topsail schooner, the St. Paul, which came ashore (Captain Moody Thurlow) and rotted about 300 feet south of the Will Smith-Noyes store lot. Another was the Massey or Mercy which was blown ashore on the south side of Green Head and rotted there. Joseph lived at Jacks Cornor and went back and forth to his work on Thurlows or Crotch Island and his brother Thomas lived on the present George Redman lot on the Cross Road. Joseph lived in a big two story house that was torn down, and stood on the foundation of the present (1903) Colby house at Jacks Corner. The house now standing there was built just opposite Bill Gross ( on the eastern side of the road, where now is only a cellar). When Abraham Colby and his wife died (Abraham was drowned, May 7, 1839 on the Penobscot River by being knocked of his pinkie, the house was bought by Stephen Colby, who bought out the heirs of the Colby lot, who then tore down the old shattered Colby house and moved the new on, purchased upon it. This is the house now standing there but the present barn next to the road was one built by Stephen Colby. Where the barn now stands the old original Joseph colby barn which rotted and was torn down. The old Joseph Colby fireplace was abotu eight feet from jam to jam and was made of brick. Part of the brick are in the chimney of the present house. Joseph Colby was a very strong man and could carry four bushels of corn on his shoulders and carry it up stairs. Joseph and his wife Eunice died at Jacks Corner and are buried in the old cemetery.
