The Advocate Clifton, Illinois (Iroquois County) March, 1925 Mr. John B. Colby, one of the last veterans of the Civil War in this vicinity, passed away at his home in Clifton last Wednesday night, March 25, 1925, following an illness of several months duration. The ten days preceding his death he was unconscious and was able to partake of but a small portion of nourishment. Constantly throughout his illness his good wife kept a ceaseless watch over him and administered to him to try to ease his suffering. Mr. Colby had been an active man throughout his entire lifetime, both politically and in the church life of the community. When Abraham Lincoln was nominated the first time at the Wigwam in Chicago, Mr. Colby was one of those present. Two years ago at a Lincoln program at the Methodist church he gave a short talk on the convention and related clearly many of the interesting things which took place at that time. Mr. Colby was a member of the Jacquith Post, G. A. R., and was one of the active members of the organization. Every Memorial Day he was always present, wearing his army suit of blue, and one of his last requests was that he be buried in the suit he loved. To use the words of that song, which says, "One by one they are departing", is fitting, as but a few short years ago this vicinity was blessed with a number of the boys of the G. A. R. Now the ranks have dwindled and all but one, Mr. Dave Goldtrap, have answered the final call. May we always cherish and respect the memory of our departed comrades throughout the coming years. Mr. John B. Colby, one of the last members of the Jacquith Post of the G. A. R., died Wednesday, March 25, 1925 at his home in Clifton. Mr. Colby was born in Danville, Vermont, on April 26th, 1840, of New England parentage. His grandfather, Thomas Colby served in the Cotinental Army during the Revolutionary War. In September following his birth his family moved to Illinois where his boyhood days were spent on a farm near McHenry. Moved by the spirit of patriotism he enlisted in Battery M, 1st Illinois Artillery and served throughout the Civil War. He was honorably discharged in July 1865. He was with Thomas at Chickamaugua and fought in many of the important battles of the war. Returning to McHenry he resumed farming and on October 17, 1866, was married to Mary Lester in Richview, Illinois. Two children were born to this marriage, Allie Colby Smith of Clifton and Edwin Lester Colby of Hazelhurst, Illinois. In 1875 he moved to Clifton where he engaged in the Mercantile business. His wife died January 6th, 1880. On March 10, 1881, he married Anna Lester. One child, Leonard Henry, was born of this marriage. He is survived by his wife, three children, ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one aged sister, Mrs. Sarah Sherburne of McHenry, Illinois. Throughout his life, Mr. Colby took an active part in political and church life of Clifton. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and during his lifetime a true and faithful member of this belief. The funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church Saturday, March 28, at 2:00 P.M. by the Rev. R. I. Stone, of Cropsey, assisted by the Rev. W. G. Anderson, pastor of the local church. Rev. Stone, an old friend of the family and one who knew Mr. Colby well, paid him many fitting tributes in his sermon. A male quartet, M. L. Morel, Rev. Anderson, B. J. Ritter and H. E. Harling, sang two selections, "Rock of Ages" and "Remember Me". M. L. Morel sang as a solo "Lead Kindly Light". Six members of the Clifton Post American Legion acted as pallbearers and escorted their comrade of the Civil War to the church. The pallbearers were Elmer White, Edmond Hamends, Henry Morel, Ancel Dion, Nels Jensen and Harry Harling. The body was conveyed back to his late home after the services and was then taken to McHenry, Illinois, the following day where he was buried with full military honors by the McHenry Post of the American Legion. To the members of this family was extend our heartfelt sympathy in this their hour of bereavement. Among the relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were Leonard Colby of Downers Grove, Ill., Hawley Smith of Chicago, Harold Smith of Champaign, Mildred Smith of Kankakee and Mrs. Dinsmore of Chicago. Card of Thanks To all who kindly assisted us during our sorrow we wish to express our heartfelt thanks. To all who sent flowers, gave the use of their cars, and to the boys of the American Legion for their kind services, we extend out gratitude. Mrs. John Colby and Family He has Ancestral File Number 1HV7-JTM. He was also known as John Bigsby Colby. He was buried in the Woodland Cemetery at McHenry, McHenry County, Illinois He was also known as John Bigford Colby. John came to McHenry, Illinois while still a child. During the Civil War he enlisted in Company M. in the First Regiment of Illinois Light Artillery, on 28 July 1862, and was in service throughout the war, being discharged on 24 July 1865, three years later. He wrote a letter to his brother from Chattanooga, Tennessee on Saturday, 26 September 1863, from which we quote: "The battle commenced in Georgia; it lasted 4 days: I was in on Sunday the 20: Our Battery lost 14 killed, 7 wounded. Our Brigade lost one third of their number!! The gun that I was on is no, 4, lost 4 men. We lost our Sargent, he was shot through the leg; my partner was shot through the leg also. I was wounded in the thumb a little but not enough to hurt much; it was a piece of a shell that struck me. . . . I had a ball shot through my blouse also. . . in sight of the mountain. I can see their camp fires at night; they reach 6 miles; they have got large reinforcements I think. We fought against Longstreet forces on Sunday. We took some prisoners and they said so. A. B. Hill Corps was here too so we had a large army to fight. I am glad that is no more than it is! I thought one time that they would take the whole army prisoners!! but we are safe now. I saw E. Smith the other day; he is all rite now! Frank Mead is well and Henry Gage is well too. I have seen them all since the fight. My love to all. The first resolution read: Resolved, that we disapprove of agitating the subject of slavery in the now slaveholding states as having a tendency to excite the passion, breed ill will in neighborhoods--break up all society and scatter the seeds of disunion and rebellion in our happy country. Resolution 2nd That we will use our utmost exertions to put a stop to agitating the subject in our town and for this purpose recommend to all to abstain from meeting with the abolitionists to discuss the subject of slavery. JOHN DENNY COLBY "A life, quiet and unostentatious, characterized by the most honorable purposes and fidelity to duty was that lived by John Denny Colby. A native of New Hampshire, he was born in 1837, a son of John and Mary (Denny) Colby. In the year 1844 the father camewith his family to Memphis and conducted a large dairy business here. Having an invalid wife he purchased a large farm from the government in Minnesota in the vicinity of St. Paul and later the subject of this review and the family spent several years alternating between the two places; at one time during an epidemic in Memphis they spent a period of seven years in the north without returning to Tennessee, after which they took up their permanent abode in Memphis. The original home of John and Mary Colby and families was on twenty-five acres of land at Poplar and West Waldron, living in a brick house on that place. On account of the migratory methods of the family life during his youthful days John Denny Colby was educated by private tutors, both in Memphis and in Minnesota. When the Civil war broke out he was among the first to enlist, joining Company C of the Seventh Tennessee Regiment, one of the most famous cavalry regiments of the war. The history of this organization possesses a strong local interest, by reason of the fact that several of the companies composing it were raised in the Bluff City and all the others were from West Tennessee. The men composing the regiment felt they had a right to be called the First and record is here made of the fact that they were virtually the first to organize but through some technicality were called the Seventh, but as such the glory of their record compensates for their loss of first place in name. This regiment was originally commanded by Colonel, afterward General, W. I. H. Jackson, and then successively by Colonels J. G. Stark, W. S. Duckworth and William F. Taylor. No regiment in the war exhibited greater daring or fidelity to the cause for which they fought than the famous Seventh, and a number of general officers, colonels and other distinguished field officers commenced their fighting career as soldiers and officers of this command. Among these was General N. B. Forrest, who enlisted as a private soldier in Captain Josiah White's old Company D on June 14, 1861. The regiment under the leadership of its dashing commander won renown in the deadly combats at Oxford, Coffeeville, Holly Springs, Davis Mills, Mentone, Brittains Lane, Colliersville, Union City, Prairie Mound, Guntown, Harrisburg, Athens , Sulphur Tustle and on many other occasions in that long sanguinary struggle. Mr. Colby entered as a private and rose to a second lieutenancy. On leaving home to join his regiment his mother gave him a small piece of cotton cloth with several gold dollars quilted into the piece and told him not to make use of them unless driven by extremity to do so. This he obeyed implicitly and only once while a prisoner of war did he use a gold piece, the occasion being when with which to buy a loaf of bread, and this he shared with the guard. At the close of the war Mr. Colby returned to Memphis, and with his brother Eli, purchased twelve acres of land on New Raleigh road, now Chelsea street, at Breedlove, surrounding the location of the present home, and there they started a dairy farm. At the same time John Denny Colby conducted a large farm at Woodbury, Minnesota, which remained in possession of the family until a recent date. Mr. Colby was strictly a home man, wrapped up in the interests of his family, being at all times a devoted husband and father. His was a conscientious Christian character and he was ever actuated by Christian principles. His family attend the Chelsea Avenue Presbyterian church. On the 5th of November, 1866, Mr. Colby was united in marriage to Miss Georgia Plumer, a daughter of Horace and Nancy (Woodruff) Plumer. To this marriage there were born eleven children: John Denny, who died in infancy; John Denny, who died at the age of seventeen years; Nannie Denny, who passed away the year following her graduation from Miss Clara Conway's School for Girls; Georgia, who died at the age of fifteen; Horace P., now a landowner of Memphis; Clarence and Morrill, both deceased; Mary, living at the old homestead with her mother; Jennie, now Mrs. J. Clyde Zink of Memphis; Albert, who is engaged in the real estate business in Memphis; and Mehitable T., the wife of the Rev. Charles A. Harper of Clarendon, Arkansas, pastor of the Presbyterian church there. Mr. Colby gave his political allegiance always to the democratic party. He was an upright and public-spirited citizen, who believed in law and order and when the war was decided against the south he steadfastly refused to join those bodies who took the law into their own hands and meted out a self-imposed justice sometimes merited and sometimes not. Mr. Colby took the stand that he had taken the oath of office to be a loyal citizen of the United States and was bound thereby. This loyalty to his word was one of his splendid traits of character. He was ever faithful to any cause with which he became allied and he worked earnestly for the uplift and benefit of his neighborhood. He passed away February 14, 1892, and although a third of a century has come and gone he is yet most kindly remembered by those who were his associates and friends." Pages 315 & 317.
