Departed this life yesterday morning (Nov. 28th) at the residence of Mr. Wm. Fauquier in this borough, after a painful and lingering sickness, which he bore with Christian fortitude and resignation, the Rev. John Colby, a Baptist Minister from the state of Vermont. A few weeks since Mr. Colby reached this place from the north being on his way to Charleston, S.C. where he hoped to recover the health and strength, which he had spent in service of his Lord and Master. But it was decreed otherwise-his sufferings are at an end, for he has fallen asleep in the arms of Jesus, and his immortal spirit has winged its flight to that bright world of bliss, where the wicked cease from trouble and the weary pilgrim is forever at rest.

For the satisfaction of his relatives and friends at a distance, and an act of justice to the worthy family, in whose house Mr Colby breathed his last, we deem it proper to state that he received every respect and attention, which his offices and sufferings required. Norfolk, Va. paper.

Connecticut Courant
Hartford, Connecticut
9 Dec 1817

At Norfolk, (Va.) on the 28th ult. at the residence of Mr. Wm. M. Fauquier, after a painful and lingering sickness, which he bore with Christian fortitude and resignation, the Rev. John Colby, a Baptist Minister from the State of Vermont. A few weeks since, Mr. C. reached this place from the north, being on his way to Charleston, S. C. where he had hoped to recover that health and strength which he had spent in the service of his Lord and Master. But it was decreed otherwise. His sufferings are at an end. He has fallen a sleep in the arms of Jesus, and his immortal spirit has winged its flight to that bright world of bliss, where the "wicked cease from troubling, and the weary pilgrim is forever at rest."

For the satisfaction of his relatives and friends at a distance, and as an act of justice to the worthy family in whose house Mr. Colby breathed his last, we deem it proper to state, that he received every respect and attention which his office and his sufferings required.

He was buried in Norfolk, Virginia. There is a headstone for him in the Sutton, Vermont cemetery.
REV. JOHN COLBY,
the 3d., son of Thomas, born in Sandwich, N. H., Dec. 9, 1807, came to Billymead, (now Sutton,) in 1788, and nothing is known of his boyhood except what is published in his life by himself and that not at hand.

He was ordained, Nov. 30, 1809. He traveled and preached through Vermont, New Hampshire, and some in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New York and, perhaps, in other states; at one time, he went into Pennsylvania and Ohio.

He built the first meeting-house in Sutton. It was north of the cemetery and built with large, square pews, seats round the pew and meetings were held in it until the White Church was built when it was moved to the farm of Jerome Bally and used for a dwelling house.

Elder John Colby came home from his trips of preaching several times ; at one time so feeble, he thought that he must die; but after a time he believed if Elders Charles and Nathaniel Bowles and Daniel and Joshua Quimby were to pray for him, he would recover, it appears by the record, June 8, 1817, Daniel Quimby believed that the two Bowles, Joshua Quimby and himself should go and pray for Elder John to get well, and on the 9th., they four started for Sutton.

During the night of the 8th., Colby says: "I reflected I had been trying to regain health by following the directions of one and another, and had never followed the directions of St. James, Chapt. 5: "Is any among you sick, let him call the Elders of the church — &c. He expressed himself to his father and said who shall go for them? His father said he would and was preparing when the four clergymen he had selected arrived for the very same purpose. But it is said the Rev. Charles had no faith at first ; and that he said it was too much like raising the dead. But they all knelt down. The Elder Quimbys lead and Elder Nathaniel Bowles followed. The three first prayers were for faith for Rev. Brother Charles, who continued in his unbelief until near the close of the third prayer when as he said he could hardly wait for the prayer to close. As soon as the opportunity came, he commenced his prayer for Colby's restoration; and as Colby says before it was finished, all pain had left his body and he was as free from it as ever in his life. He breathed easier, his cough began to abate, from that hour he commenced to amend. As soon as able he resumed his labors as an evangelist. In the fall, he started on a tour South and died at Norfolk Va., Nov. 28, 1817.

John COLBY was born in 1787 in Vermont. He died in NOV 1817 at Holland, Erie County, New York.
Parents of this John are unknown to me at present. He is NOT the son of Ezekiel Colby and Ruth Davis. Their son John was married to Patty Blood.

Froze to death in snowstorm near Cazenove Creek His family lived in the Holland area, had several children. John and Miranda lived east of Holland Village, and barely survived the "cold summer" of 1816. John was caught in the first snowstorm of the season while searching for his cattle. He was found covered with snow not far from another settlers's cabin.
=======================
The following is from the Centennieal History of Erie County by Crisfield Johnson published in 1876, pages 311-313.

On the eastern side of Vermont Hill, nearly east from the embryo village, lived John Colby, a young settler some thirty years of age, wit a wife and two small children. Like many others he had been severely straitened by the "cold summer" of 1816, and had barely struggled through the succeeding winter. By the autumn of 1817, he obtained a cow and one or two young cattle.

When the first snow of the season come, in the month of November, Colby’s cattle and those of a neighbor strayed away, and the two started out in search of them. The neighbor found his and returned home, while Colby continued on in search of his own.

All day and all night his wife expected his return, but he came not. More snow fell during the night. The next morning the news was sent around the neighborhood that John Colby must be lost. The log dwellings of the settlers on the hill were widely scattered, but the news spread rapidly and a goodly number of hardy, active men were soon assembled. The snow of the last night had not entirely obliterated the track of the wanderer, and the searchers followed upon it.

For awhile it pursued the direction in which Colby was probably seeking his cattle. At length, however, it got among the hills and ravines southward from the site of Holland village, and then it would appear as if the traveler had entirely lost track of home, and had wandered aimlessly among those forest-covered steeps. Very likely night had overtaken him before he entered among them.

His friends pursued among the gorges his devious pathway, barely discernible under the new-fallen snow. So tortuous had been his wanderings that, though the searchers pressed on with all practicable speed, the forenoon passed and the afternoon waned ere they discovered aught but the half-covered track of the missing man.

At length, a little before nightfall, as the party was approaching the settlements on Cazenove creek, the leader discovered curled up at the foot of a tree and covered with snow, something resembling a human form. All quickly gathered around, and there lay John Colby, dead, only a short distance from the clearing and house of a settler.

It would appear that, having once lost his way, he had become entirely unable to adopt any line of action. When night came on he had wandered about at random among the hills and ravines, growing colder and weaker as he went. Had the obvious expedient of following a stream of water down hill suggested itself to him, it would soon have carried him to a clearing, but nothing of the kind seems to have come into his mind.

So he had struggled on, and at length, toward morning, had leaned against a tree to rest, and then, overcome by cold and fatigue, had fallen down in a heap at its foot.

Every event of that kind was pretty sure to be celebrated in rhyme by some rude versifier of the forest. One Simeon Davis was the poetic genius of that locality and ere long he had turned the mournful story of poor John Colby into verse. No less that two hundred and forty lines were produced by the facile poet, and these being reduced to writing by some admirer, (for Simeon himself was destitute of that accomplishment,) were copied, and repeated, and sung in many a frontier home for more than a score of years.

In 1880 he was a retail grocer in Troy, Rensselaer County, New York. He died on 28 APR 1884 at Troy, Rensselaer County, New York. Buried in the Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, New York. He appears in the 1820 Census in Springfield, Cheshire, New Hampshire, page 203 listing one male under 10, two males 16 and under 26, and one female sixteen and under 26. It is believed his younger brother Caleb COLBY, was residing with him during this Census. John COLBY was elected as a Selectman for the Town of Springfield, New Hampshire in 1821 and again in 1822. (SOURCE: History of Springfield, New Hampshire, Charles McDaniel.) He taught school in Wendell (which later became Sunapee), Cheshire County, New Hampshire in 1819,1822,1823,1825 and 1827. In March 1827, the Wendell, New Hampshire Board of Selectmen approved John Colby to exercise the business of ardent spirits. The following year, he and Jeremiah Newell were approved to operate the business of Taverner at their dwelling house in Wendell. The tavern and store operated by John Colby was frequently the site of many of Wendell’s town meetings over next several years. John Colby became very active in Wendell, New Hampshire town government and was elected as a Selectman in 1828, 1829, 1831, 1833,1835 and 1839. He was also the town clerk in 1831, 1833, 1835, 1836, 1838 and 1839. Five times he was elected as the Representative to the General Court (state legislature of the time) in 1828, 1830, 1833, 1835 and 1838. He held a number of other elected offices in Wendell during the years 1828 to 1840 including Town Treasurer, Auditor, Sealer of Weights and Measure, Surveyor of Lumber, Surveyor of Highways and Moderator. There seems to be no indication of political involvement after 1840. (SOURCES: Town Clerk’s Records, Sunapee, New Hampshire; Town Records, Sunapee, NH, FHL Films 15322/15323; and the History of Sunapee, William C. Sturoc.)

In 1850, John Colby, his wife Judith, son Daniel S. Colby and Maria Antoinette Colby appear in the 1850 Census in Troy, Rensselaer County, New York (Seventh Ward of the City of Troy, page 264). His occupation is listed as carpenter. There is no indication of why this family relocated to Troy, New York, seemingly giving up a prominent business and political career in Wendell, New Hampshire. Later, John Colby and his son, John Peasley Colby, would operate a grocery store, J & J. P. Colby, in Troy, New York.
