He died on 27 FEB 1903 at Wadsworth, Medina County, Ohio. Mansfield News Mansfield, Ohio Feb 27, 1903 Obituary. ------------- Colby. R. E. Morris received a dispatch Friday morning from Mrs. J. B. Colby at Wadsworth, stating that her husband died there at an early hour in the morning. Mr. Colby was a well known and experienced commercial traveler in his day and resided for a number of Years with his family on West Fourth Street in this city. Mr. Colby and his family removed from this city about ten years ago and have since resided at Wadsworth, where Mr. Colby had charge of the salt works in which he and his brother-in-law were financially interested. The deceased, it is stated, had been afflicted with a complication of diseases for some time, but he was able to be about and attend to business affairs. Only a few days ago he was in Mansfield shaking hands with old friends and neighbors. Mr. Colby was about 60 years of age and he is supposed to have carried the first crackers out of Mansfield in a sample case. The cracker factory referred to was the first of its kind in Mansfield, and was established by his uncle, who is now identified with the police department of San Francisco. The cracker factory was located near the present site of the News building. Later this cracker works was owned and operated by the firm of Purtell, Hartley & Black. Mr. Colby traveled for Harroun & Hammond for a time and then went into the retail business at Nevada. He later returned to this city and was on the road for a time for the firm of J. R. Brown & Sons. Subsequently he traveled for the Ohio Suspender company of this city. The Colby family has been in Washington for the greater part of the winter, where the daughter, Miss Mable Colby, has been pursuing her vocal studies. A wife and daughter are left to mourn the loss of a husband and father. Mr. Colby's home is at Clairmont, N. H., and at this writing it is not known where the remains will be buried. Sir Knight Frank Marquis, of Mansfield commandery Knights Templar, also received a dispatch this morning from Mrs. Colby, conveying information of the death. James F. Colby GAGEVILLE James F. Colby, 76, of Gageville, Ohio, died Thursday morning, Oct. 23, 2008, at his home with his family at his side.Born Jan. 14, 1932, in Ashtabula, Ohio, he was the son of Earl L. and Dorothy (Frary) Colby. He was a lifelong area resident and attended Ashtabula High School. A Veteran, he enlisted in the Army in 1956 and was a Private First class upon his honorable discharge in 1958, and remained in the Reserves for many years. During his time in the service, he traveled to Holland and Germany and saw many sights which he shared through his pictures and home movies. He retired from Union Carbide/Elkem Metals in 1981 at which time he became self-employed and began caring for the Gageville Cemetery, a job which he truly loved and kept until this past summer, serving the community for 16 years. A devout Christian, James was a member of the Ashtabula Wesleyan Methodist Church his entire life. He was the church treasurer and also worked at Stoneboro Wesleyan Methodist Church camp every year in the kitchen. James loved to bird watch, walking his dog, spending time with his grandchildren, and loved being a prankster. He was lovingly nicknamed the agitator. Survivors include his wife, Loretta (Sowry) whom he married Oct. 4, 1958; a son, Timothy (Rose) Colby of Jefferson, Ohio; two daughters, Joanne (Columbus) Farmer of Jefferson, Ohio and Janice (Mark) Luoma of Ashtabula, Ohio; five grandchildren, Bruce Colby, Christina Farmer, Mike Farmer, Mark Farmer, and Daniel Luoma; three sisters, Esther Nelson of Charleston, S.C., Dorothy (Paul) Brink of Salisbury, N.C., and Rebekah (Bill) Untch of Thomasvile, N.C.; sister-in-law, Cheryl Colby of Conneaut, Ohio; two brothers, George (Dee) Colby of Fort Collins, Colo., and Earl (Betty) Colby of Ashtabula, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews, friends, and his church family. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Rae; two sisters, Sarah Colby and Mary Golden; and a brother-in-law, Bob Golden. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 27th, at East Conneaut Wesleyan Methodist Church, 315 East Main Road, Conneaut, Ohio, with the Rev. Marvin Blowers officiating. Haverhill Gazette 24 Feb. 1962 James Colby, World War II Veteran, Dies James G. Colby, 44, 9 Whittier St., died suddenly early last night at his home. Dr. John P. Creed, Medical examiner, said death was caused by coronary thrombosis. He was born in Haverhill, March 8, 1917, son of Harry W. and Grave V. (Foisey) Colby, both of Haverhill. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as a machinist mate second class in the U.S. Navy. He lived here all his life and was employed as a section chief by the Merrimac Metal Finishing Co., Merrimac. Besides his parents, he leaves his wife, Mrs. Ena M. (MacKinnon) Colby, a son, James G. Colby Jr., a daughter, Mrs. Karen Wendell, two brothers, Fred C. and Robert H. Colby, all of Haverhill; three sisters, Mrs. Charlene Bradley, Miami, Fa.; Mrs. Iva B. Grant, Newfields, N. H. and Mrs, Thelma O'Neil, Manchester, N. H. and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Monday afternoon at 1:30 at the Tilton, Rogers and Gale Funeral Home, 334 Main St. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. He was the beloved husband of Donna S. (Russell) Colby. Born in Haverhill, Aug. 22, 1949, he was the son of the late James G. and E. Margaret (MacKinnon) Colby. He was a graduate of Haverhill High School, Class of 1967, and had attended Northeastern University. At the time of his death, he was a truck driver for Dunkin Donuts, and had previously worked 26 years for Vernon Plastics. Devoted to his five grandchildren, he was their very proud grandfather, ever ready to share stories about his grandchildren. He was a lover of animals and supporter of MSPCA, and an avid NASCAR fan. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter and one son, Buffy M. Russell and Richard A. McPhee; one sister, Karen A.
