Monday morning I sent for the Doctor and Tuesday she had a fit and the disease went to her head and the Doctor said she must die. It was very hard to part with her. She was a promising and lovely child but alas she has gone and we cannot see any more in this world. I ought to wrote to you before but have had no time as we have been very much hurried. The Malone Farmer Wednesday, September 28th, 1932 BRASHER FALLS AND VICINITY HAPPENINGS One of our Brasher Falls men whom we all admire and whom one of his friends describes, is Henry Colby. For the past forty-five years with an average of three hundred twelve days to the year and two trips to the day, making a total of twenty-eight thousand trips, Colby, such is the record of Henry Colby of this village, who with his faithful horse and wagon has held the position of drayman between Winthrop and Brasher for nearly half a century. When he began these trips he was a young man twenty-six years old. He was born in Chateaugay, New York on March 25th, 1861, one of eight children of Silas and Julia Peck Colby. The first 20 years of his life were spent in his native village. He then came to Brasher Falls to work-in the Church lumber mill, remaining there for five years. He then purchased a horse and a single lumber wagon and began his trips to Winthrop for freight and express. The distance is one mile. For many years when the twin villages were smaller the road was rough and rocky. Very little was expended to keep it in repair. Each man if possible worked out his own road tax, with minor effects on the road. In winter the drifts were many and deep. It was seldom anything one to help the traveler, except as some kind soul would get out with his horses and caldron kettle and drive through once. Winthrop had no church edifice at this time. Services were held in a hall. The village boasted three small stores, a post office, the old Ogdensburg and Lake Champlain depot, the old Dunton hotel, a harness shop and a blacksmith forge. Time and labor have gradually bettered things. Several fires have leveled the old building not a store or public building remains that was here when Mr. Colby began his trips in 1887. New and more modern buildings fill the places of the old ones. Winthrop's two churches were built in 1888 and 1889. The name of the village was changed from Stockton to Winthrop April 1st. 1891. Our cemetery association was incorporated in September, 1901. The brick pavement was laid between the two villages in 1915. The First National Bank of Winthrop was completed in 1915. There is no one in business in Winthrop who were there at the time Mr. Colby began his unceasing trips. Seymour Crapser, George H. Russell, Eli M. Shaw, John W. Morrison, Henry W. Stearns. Miller, Mrs. Mary Miller, Moses Bowman, Charles Goodnough, Daniel P. Haley, Luther E. Ellison, Will Stickney, Cortland C. Covey, Omer P. Stearns, Spenicer H. Stearns, Herbert L. Davis, Henry Grant and George Prichard have all been prominent business people during this time and have passed to the beyond. Since the pavement was completed many new enterprises have followed, but Mr. Colby still travels the familiar street in the old familiar way. Neighbors listen interestedly for the methodical clap-clap-clap of his horses hoofs on the brick road. The iron shoes can be heard a long way off and with each four steps of the horse this is what one hears "Hen-ry Col-by, Hen-ry Col-by" until the man and his wagon are out of hearing. He has brought joy to many homes, each year with the delivery of many and wonderful Christmas gifts, deep sorrow to others when a casket or rough box has been his burden. Babies bonnets, threshing machines, tin pails and plows are all in his line, nothing is too heavy or too light for his load. On many days more than the accustomed two trips have been made. A carload of flour, wire fencing or coal has meant an all day's job but Mr. Colby has seldom missed his routine. An occasional short illness, or a too hearty kick from his faithful horse has caused a short time substitute, but the vacations enforced or otherwise have been rare and he is still as prompt and faithful as ever, accommodating to each and very businessman or private individual who has a trucking job for him. In 1885 he married Miss Winifred Dinshaw of this village, Two children, Howard Colby, now of Malone and Leah, now Mrs. Richard Andres of Alexandria Bay were born to them. There are three grandchildren in Malone, Eugenia, Marshall and Howard Colby Jr. Mrs. Colby passed away in 1926. Mrs. Nellie Smith, a dear old lady over 80 years old, now keeps the home. Mr. Colby good-natured, untiring and obiging seems to have no thought of giving over his task to a younger man. He has worn out four horses on the route. The first on did service for fifteen years, the present one "Beauty" (not named for her attractiveness we are informed.) plods along in her even rhythmic step as faithfully as though she was "Black Beauty." It is hoped Mr. Colby and his pal will continue their trips for many years to come. Their constant and methodical would be sadly missed by neighbors who line the road way. His father was born Dec. 27, 1808, and came to McHenry in 1840, and has been a Justice of the Peace of this township twenty-two years, and has held other offices of trust. His mother died in 1859. He remained on the farm, attending the district school in the winter until nineteen years of age, when he began clerking in his brother's drug store. Four years later he bought the store and carried it on alone several years, when his brother bought an interest and they carried on a general store under the firm name of Colby Brothers, at the same time running a store at Nunda. In 1881 the partnership was dissolved, O. C. taking the store at Nunda, and Henry remaining at McHenry. Mr. Colby was married Sept. 6, 1870, to Flora, daughter of David Harris.
