==========================================================

He died on 20 MAR 1882 at Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. He was an inventor.
According to Silvio Bedini, author and Deputy Director of the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, in 1846, Hall Colby was the author of a science teaching booklet "A PLAN OR MAP OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM...." IN 1847, he applied for a patent for the "Colby's Concentric Duplicate Mariner's Compass." He gave his address as Rochester, N.Y.
In 1854, Colby produced a magnetic orrery, a 'chart, &c. of the solar system'. And in 1855, he assigned rights to another invention, a Self Adjusting Quadrant, to Russell C. Root of New York City. By 1856 he had formed the Colby Nautical Instrument Company. In 1859, he had written another book, "The Improved Nautical Almanac or True Navigator."
When he was 70 years old, in 1879, Hall Colby was granted a patent on an altitude instrument, which apparently, from the testimonies in his booklet about "Physical Laws of the Planetary System" had been on trial in steamships for a number of years. Some ceremony related either to the patent or the book was attended by his 12 year old grandson, Franklin G. Colby, who wrote this information on his copy of the book.
Mr. Bedini reports that Hall Colby continued publishing books, "On the Physical Laws of the Universe of Matter" in 1872, and "Nautical Astronomy Corrected" in 1876.
No family record exists as to the why and how a doctor's son from northern New York, who called himself a 'farmer' in the 1840 census, became so interested and knowledgeable about the solar system and celestial navigation. Who was his teachers? What was his inspiration? How did he support his large family? From his writings, it is obvious he was a religious man.

He has more notes. Patents.
Patent 5096 Hall Colby, Rochester, Monroe Co., mariner’s compass, 5/1/1847

He was buried in the West Greece Cemetery at Parma, Monroe County, New York
Information on the death of Hall Colby was found in a newspaper clipping in the Bible of his grandson, Edward Barrett Colby:
"On the west bank of the Merrimac River in the old Granite State, in the small town of Salisbury, (New Hampshire) a son was born to Dr. Zaccheus Colby and his wife, Abigail Hall Colby, in the fall of the year of 1800. They named their first son with his mother's family name.

When the little boy was two years of age his uncles, Ephraim, Jr., Abraham, Isaac ant Timothy, left the town settled by their ancestor, Anthony Colby about 1639, and struck out for the northwestern New York tract of Philps and Gorham, owned in 1802 by Wadsworth and Murray. This was in Genesee County, then called North Hampton Township, but now the town of Ogden, in Monroe County, NY (from: :History of Rochester and Monroe County" by W,F, Peck, pub 1908)

Two years later, the rest of the family joined the first four. They included Hall's grandparents; Ephraim and Mary Merrill Colby; his other uncles, Eastman and Merrill; and his parents. It is not known if his older sister, Sophia was still living, or whether his next younger brother, Luke was born. Everyone else in the family settled in the town of Ogden except Dr. Zaccheus. He settled on the Ridge Road (which he helped to survey), in what is now known as the town of Greece.
