Colby Sr., 78, of 13C Charlemont Road, died Thursday (11-27-03) in Franklin Medical Center, Greenfield. He was born in Easthampton on March 20, 1925, the son of Howard and Myrtle (Shaw) Colby. He attended Northampton schools and in his early years he worked as a welder. His wife, the former Jean Phillips, died in 1967. He married the former Lila Jackson in February 1968 in Northampton. The early part of their married life was spent in Goshen. They moved to Buckland in 1976. He was a mechanic for Ken Vile before retiring. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, receiving nine Battle Stars and medals from 1942 to 1945. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans VFW and American Legion. Besides his wife, he leaves four sons, William Lumbis of Buckland, Harry H. He was buried in the Bingham Village Cemetery at Bingham, Somerset County, Maine Hartley Colby, father of Warren and son of Benjamin was born May 28, 1793 in Embden, Maine, in the old Colby home on Moore's Island, which was then called Colby Island, located in the Kennebec River just above Patterson Bridge. He married Sarah Dennis of Bingham, Me. on Feb. 1, 1816. He was a successful lumberman, famous for his skill as a "timber cruiser" or one who estimates the amount of lumber that can be cut from a section of woodland, and a "white water boatman" or one possessing expertness in the handling of boats in dangerous rapids. He was a captain in the state militia. The family lived at first on Colby Island. At the time of the great freshet, in 1832, when the dam at Moosehead Lake gave way, Hartley was away from home. The family was rescued by the great bravery of two men who reached the house just after the water flowing over the floors had put out the fire in the fireplace. Soon after the freshet, the family moved to Pleasant Ridge. One night, the wolves followed the children home from school and.tried to get in thru the windows. The family moved a third time to Bingham, and finally, a little while before Hartley's death, to Moscow. Hartley Colby died Jan. 22, 1864; aged 70 years. His widow died Mar. 23, 1875; aged 77 years.
