He has been in railroad service, on what is now the White Mountains division of the Boston & Maine railroad, from 1870 to the present time.

He enlisted as a private in Co. E, Third regiment, N. H. N. G., April 15, 1885; received his captain's commission ten days later, and was mustered out in 1890. He was commissioned paymaster of the Third in 1894; commissioned first lieutenant in the First regiment, N. George Henry COLBY was born on 27 DEC 1844 in Colebrook, Coos County, New Hampshire. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Colebrook, Coos County, New Hampshire. (living at home with father and mother) He appeared in the census in 1880 in Lancaster, Coos County, New Hampshire. (living at home with mother)
He received his education at the Colebrook and Lancaster academies, and learned the art of printing in the office of "The Coos Republican", at Lancaster, and later with the Riverside Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Prior to going to Cambridge he had served one year as postal clerk in the store of Royal Joyslin, and three years with E. & T. Fairbanks & Company, at St. Johnsbury, Vermont; had failed in an attempt to establish himself in the book trade in Lancaster; and had read law for one year in the office of Ossian Ray, of Lancaster. He established "The Fairfield Chronicle" in May, 1869, a weekly newspaper published in Fairfield, Somerset County, Maine, which he managed as editor and sole proprietor for a period of ten years, and then disposed of it to a syndicate of Fairfield citizens. He then returned to Lancaster, and in the summer and fall of 1879 visited Europe, traveling extensively, and upon his return devoted six months to travel in the United States. He assumed charge of the mechanical department of three newspapers in July, 1880, owned by Thomas G. Thrumm, in Honolulu, Hawaiian Islands. One of these papers was "The Press", a weekly newspaper of considerable influence among the business residents and planters, and which was founded for the purpose of advocating the annexation of the islands to the United States. When this object had been attained the paper suspended. "The Kukoa" was published in Kanaka, the native language of the islanders, and had a circulation of five thousand weekly. It exceeded a great influence among the native population. "The Friend" was a monthly missionary journal, edited and owned by Father Damon. After nearly two years devoted to the newspaper and job printing business at Honolulu, Mr. Colby ascended the volcano of Kilauca, and traveled about the islands. He then visited Australia, and returning east in May, 1883, opened a book store in Lancaster, where he has been prosperously located for almost twenty-five years, thus making a splendid contrast to his failure in this direction in his earlier years. During this time he has made a trip to the island of Jamaica; spent a winter in Mexico; three time visited Europe; in 1906 traveled to Japan as the invited guest of Hon. H. W. Denison, the legal adviser of the Japan Foreign Office, and in that land spent a month in continuous travel. He returned in 1907, on his way visiting Siam, China, India and the Mediterranean, spending some time at Naples and not omitting to visit Pompeii and Rome, thence home by Gibraltar and the Azores. Upon his return he delivered free lectures, by invitation, to about twenty audiences in the various towns of Coos and Grafton counties. Mr. Colby is a notable man of business, and carries about fifty thousand volumes in his stock, which is the largest number carried by any house of this kind in the state. He has been an intelligent observer during his travels, is an interesting writer, a lover of books, modest and unassuming in his manner, liberal in his views and tenacious of his convictions. He is a firm believer in public libraries and schools, and has done much to further the interests of these institutions. His religious views are those of the late Robert G. Ingersoll; he is an advocate of women's rights; and is a believer in cremation after death. He has been a lifelong Republican, of the Abolition type, but has never sought nor held public office. He is a member of Fairfield Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, and of the Royal Arch Chapter of Oakland, Maine.

GEORGE L. COLBY DIED MONDAY

George Lyman Colby passed away Monday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Karl H. Walbridge, 60 Webster Street. His health had been fail during the past four months. He was 82 years of age.

The deceased was born in Berlin, Vt., on October 15th, 1851, a son of the late Stephen Benjamin and Eliza Smith Colby. Both of his parents had died before he was 12 years of age. As a young man he learned the carriage builder's trade and at a time when carriages were assembled and completely built in carriage shops. He followed this line of work until the business of carriage building changed from the shop idea to factory production. Then he turned to carpentry and followed this work for many years, usually being engaged with some contractor. He was an expert mechanic.

On Oct 19, 1876, he was united in marriage with Alice Dorothy Harran. Most of their married life was spent at Montpelier, Vt. Two daughters were born to this union: Allie, who later became Mrs. Joseph L. Pierce. of Montpelier, and Lena, who became Mrs. Karl H. Walbridge of Malone. Mrs. Pierce passed away about three years ago.

About a year following the death of his wife, she passed away on May 1, 1910, Mr. Colby came to Malone to make his home with Mr. and Mrs. Walbridge and has since resided here.

The deceased was a regular attendant at the Baptist Church here. He was a man of a retiring disposition, a prolific reader and one who maintained as active interest in the affairs of the world almost up to the time of his death. Until afflicted with the sufferings of his last illness he found a deep enjoyment in reading and in the company of a circle of neighborhood friends whose acquaintanceship he valued highly.

Mr. Colby had two brother, Charles and Stephen, the latter of whom died in youth. His brother Charles passed away five or six years in California.

Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. K. H. Walbridge wife of village clerk Walbridge of Malone, nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Parents: Stephen Benjamin COLBY and Eliza SMITH.

Spouse: Alice Dorothy HARMON. George Lyman COLBY and Alice Dorothy HARMON were married on 19 OCT 1876 in Vermont. Children were: Allie COLBY, Lena COLBY.

George M. COLBY was born on 2 JUL 1831 in Granby, Oswego County, New York. (SOURCE: Family Bible of Daniel Colby and Elizabeth Singer.) He appeared in the census in 1860 in Woodhull, Shiawassee County, Michigan. He appeared in the census in 1870 in Woodhull, Shiawassee County, Michigan. He died on 15 MAR 1910 at Michigan. George M. COLBY, a prominent and wellknown resident of Woodhulll Township, Shiawassee County, was born in Granby Township, Otsego County, N. Y., July 2, 1831. His father, Daniel D. Colby, a native of New York State, was born in 1799 and his grandfather William, a native of New Hampshire, was born in 1760. He enlisted the Revolutionary War when sixteen years old and served through the whole period of conflict, carrying to his grave a British bullet which he received at the battle of Monmouth. He was a pensioner of the Government until the day of his death. He carried on a farm of some seventy-five acres, was the father of eight sons and three daughter, and added to this number one adopted daughter. In his later years he was an earnest and devoted member of the Methodist Church. His wife died in 1835 and he survived until 1847. The family is of Irish descent and their original ancestor came to this country in Colonial times.

The father of our subject owned the homestead farm but sold it in 1836 and bought a farm in Oswego County, seven miles from Oswego City. In early life he was a Presbyterian and later a Methodist. He was a man of strict integrity and always religiously inclined. His death occurred in 1883 when he was eighty-four years old. Like his father he was a Democrat but after the breaking out of the war he became a Republican. He held the office of Justice of the Peace and was considered a Justice of more than usual ability, frequently trying cases from Oswego City. The wife of Daniel Colby was Elizabeth Singer, a sister of Isaac M. Singer, the inventor of the Singer Sewing machine. She was born in Rensselaer County, N. Y. in 1802. Eight boys and four girls completed the number of her children, all of whom she had the happiness of rearing to mature years.

They were James S., Edwin R., Eleanor M., (Mrs. Mason), Polly A., (Mrs. Place), Elizabeth., (Mrs. Erwin), George M., Archelaus A., John, Lydia E., (Mrs., Dean), William D., Charles C. and Ernest B. She was in early life a Presbyterian and later a Methodist, and was beloved and respected by all who knew her for her sterling Christian character and real goodness of heart. She and her husband had the great happiness of celebrating their golden wedding, December 4, 1869, since which time she has passed away. Adam Singer, the maternal grandfather of our subject, was of German descent and as far as known was a native of New York State. His father, the ancestor of this family, came to New York from Germany, and was a millwright and carpenter. He used to tell about being behind the redoubts during the Revolutionary War. He built many mills in New York and Ohio and in other States and died in New York in 1856 after completing his four-score years. Our subject was reared upon the farm and educated in the district school, and although he worked out some before reaching his majority he really began life for himself at that time. He came to Michigan in 1853, journeying by boat to Niagara then took cars to Buffalo, boat to Detroit and cars again to Dexter. He made his first home at Pinckney, where he had a brother living, but after a year and a half there he came to Shiawassee County. He was married July 31, 1855 to Rachael VanRiper, who was born in Lodi Township, Washtenaw County, February 18, 1835.

The parents of Mrs. Colby were Andrew J. and Catherine (Dubois) VanRiper, the former, born in New Jersey and the latter in Ulster County, N. Y. They became early pioneers of Washtenaw County, settling there in 1831, while Michigan was still a young territory. After doing much to subdue the land in their new home they moved to Shiawassee County in May, 1847, and made a farm here. Mr. VanRiper owned four hundred acres here besides giving each of his four children a generous tract of land. He was a hard worker, a Democrat in politics and a Presbyterian in religion. He died here in September, 1888, when eighty-three years old,. His faithful and devoted wife had preceded him to the other world in 1876, when she was seventy-four years old.

Mr. and Mrs. George M. Colby have been blessed with seven children, but have also been sorely bereaved, having lost all but two of these children in early infancy. The two surviving are Catherine E. who married Enoch Carl, living on a farm in Woodhull Township, and is the mother of one child, Hazel, and Charles M., who yet resides at home but has eighty acres of his own land. Charles M. is very ingenious and can turn his hand to any work presented to him. When our subject took the farm upon which he now lives it had no improvements upon it., and he built a log-house which at that time was considered the best in the township. He used to keep a good many travellers who would come in at all times of the night. He built his barn in 1866 and the house in which he now lives in 1880. He carries on mixed farming on his estate.

Mr. Colby is a Democrat in his political principles and affiliations and has held some minor township offices. He is now Deputy Sheriff and was Assessor for this school district for over twenty years. He is agent for the Shiawassee Mutual Insurance Company, also for the Niagara Company of New York and the Fire and Marine Company of Detroit. He also does collecting. His is a member of the Grange, belongs to the Patrons of Industry, and is connected with the Masonic Lodge at Williamston, Ingham County. He is a fine man and his good qualities and enterprise make him known favourably throughout all this region. A view of the pleasant homestead of Mr. Colby is represented on another page. Parents: Daniel D. COLBY and Elizabeth SINGER.
