He was born in Newbury. Mr. Colby worked at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 37 years, and, after retiring, he worked for private companies. He was a member of the Seabees during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre. Mr. Colby was a member of St. Mark Lodge, A.F. & A.M., of Newburyport, the Newburyport Commandery, K.T. 3, King Cyrus Chapter and the Shriners. He was also a former member of West Newbury's Fire Department and Finance Committee. He had also served as West Newbury's assistant building inspector. Mr. Colby enjoyed auctions and sales and repairing items including clocks and chairs. He leaves his wife of 53 years Joan (Enos); sons George E. Jr. and his wife Ann (Worsman) of New Salem, and Keith I. and his wife Lynda (Vizard) of West Newbury; daughters Deborah A. Shively and her fiance Richard A. Heath of Newton, N.H., and Rebecca A. Dole and her husband Richard P. of West Newbury; sisters Gertrude Jackman, Carolyn Relyea, and Betty Colby, all of Newbury, and Dorothy Noyes of Newburyport; brother Robert J. of Newbury; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. George Colby Remembered March 30, 2000 marked the celebration of the home going of George Colby, beloved long time former chief executive of Atherton from 1957-1969 and resident from 1969-2000. Mr. Colby who was 95 at the time of his death, will be remembered as the one who extended the original vision for compassionate care by marshaling his considerable administrative skills to acquire properties, construct new buildings, and expand the population of Atherton. George Colby was a direct descendent of immigrants who came to America with the Winthrop party in 1630 aboard a group of ships which included the Mayflower. Born in Clay Center, Kansas, on December 22, 1904, he was raised in Kansas where he completed school, met and married Estalene, and began work for the Santa Fe Railroad. The Colby's came to California in 1945. Mr. Colby served as an active layman at the First Baptist Church of Downey. Later he became Church Administrator at Temple Baptist Church of Los Angeles. George's record of service among Baptists in Southern California eventually led him to the ministry of Atherton Baptist Homes where he became Executive Director in 1957. His administration was marked by years of expansion, purchasing of new properties, and construction of new buildings to house a swelling resident population. During this time be continued to lend his able talents to the wider American Baptist family, keeping active in men's work and in national ABC life. Following his service at Atherton, George and Estalene joined the ranks as residents in 1969. They enjoyed their life at Atherton together until her death late last year. George passed away on the 74th anniversary of their wedding! When you visit the campus today, you cannot help but be impressed with the many evidences of George's faithfulness. One of our larger residences, housing 48 persons bears the name CASA COLBY . But the real legacy of George Colby can be seen in a verse adorning the cover of his life story: "And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus" (Phil. 4:19). COLBY is one of the well-known early settlers of Shelby County, and an ex-soldier of the late war. He was born in Sullivan County, New Hampshire, July 5, 1836, a son of Ira and Polly (Foster) Colby. He was reared in the place of his birth and was educated in the common schools. At the age of eighteen he took Horace Greeley's advice and came west. He spent some years in the west and south, and just before the war broke out located in southern Illinois. He enlisted in the Twenty-fourth Illinois Infantry, Company E, in July, 1861, taking an active part in the battles of Stone River, Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, and going with General Sherman on his famous march to the sea. He served three years in the Twenty-fourth Illinois, then re-enlisted in the Eighteenth Kentucky, where he served ten months; he was honorably discharged as a private He then returned to the north and engaged in the more peaceful pursuit of agriculture, settling in Fayette County, Iowa. He was united in marriage at McGregor, Iowa, October 28, 1867, to Miss Cornelia Lawson, a lady of intelligence of that town, a daughter of John D., now of Lincoln Township, this county. Mr. Colby engaged in farming in Fayette County until 1873, when he came to Shelby County and bought 240 acres of wild land in sections 9 and 10, Shelby Township; this he has improved and has built a good house and barn, and has set out a grove, so there is no better farm in the neighborhood. He made this his home until the fall of 1888, when he came to the village of Shelby to give his children better educational advantages. Mr. Colby is a Republican and a strong adherent to the principles of the party; his first vote was cast for Lincoln. He has served as trustee and as a member of the school board. He is a member of the G. A. R, Dick Yates Post, No. 361; also a member of the A. F. & A. M., and the Mt. Zion Commandery at Harlan. Mr. and Mrs. Colby are both worthy and consistent members of the Methodist Episcopal church of Shelby. They have two children, a son and a daughter -- George William and H. Etta. Mr. Colby is a man well known in the county, cordial to all, honorable in business and always gives his hearty support to any enterprise to advance religion and education.
