Forrest H. Colby, 68, former state forestry commissioner, died here today.

Colby was a native of Bingham. For several years he was connected with the larger lumber concerns in New England and the Canadian provinces.

He was buried in the Bingham Village Cemetery at Bingham, Somerset County, Maine Parents: Warren COLBY and Mary White DINSMORE.

Foster COLBY was born in NOV 1839 in Washtenaw County, Michigan. He died on 3 APR 1865 at Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi.
Buried in Apr 1865 in Civil War National Cem., Vicksburg. MS. Foster enlisted in the MI 18th Infantry "G" Company on Aug 5, 1862. He was later transferred to Company "B". On 23 Sept 1862, Foster was taken prisoner and was paroled, while on picket duty at Snow Pond, Ky. On 24 Sept 1864 he was taken prisoner at Athens, and was later released. Foster died of acute diarrhea on 5 April 1865 at McPherson U.S. Army Hospital, Vicksburg, MS. Union records indicate that while his body and other MI troops that had died, were being sent back to MI, the boat that was transporting them caught fire and sank. There is a marker for Foster at the National Cemetery at Vicksburg, Section "L", grave #6270.

Francena May Rice, 92, of Woolwich passed away July 24 at Amenity Manor in Topsham.

She was born in Westport April 24, 1910, a daughter of Ernest E. and Sybil Cookson Colby.

She attended Westport schools and Wiscasset Academy.

She married her first husband, Eugene Cromwell, and moved to Woolwich to live at the Bath Water District pumping station.

She worked at Hunnewells Store in Woolwich for eight years and at Roy Lilly's Market in Dresden for 15 years.

She married her second husband, Farnham Rice, on Sept. 29, 1957.

She was predeceased by her second husband in April, 1979.

Survivors include two granddaughters, a great-great-granddaughter, and a niece.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in Laurel Grove Cemetery in Woolwich.
Memorial donations may be made to the Make-A-Wish-Foundation, 87 Elm St., Camden 04843.

Frances Colby Rogers, a writer, died May 12 at Mount Sinai Hospital.

She was 77 years old and lived in Manhattan. Mrs. Rogers wrote "The Black Winds Blow" and "The Apple Must Be Bitten," published in the 40's. She was co-author with Alice Beard of "5,000 Years of Gems and Jewelry" and a children's book, "Mr. Brady's Camera Boy," published in 1951.

Mrs. Rogers was the daughter of Bainbridge Colby, Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson, and Natalie Sedgwick Colby, a novelist. Her marriage to the late Cameron Rogers, also a writer, ended in divorce. There are no immediate survivors.

Frances E. (Colby) Geoffrion VanHall, 79, of Northampton died Monday at home. She worked in the dietary and housekeeping departments of The Cooley Dickinson Hospital for 17 years, and retired in 1977. She was born in Easthampton, and moved here many years ago. Her husband, Ernest C. VanHall, died in 1975. Mrs. VanHall leaves five sons, Howard Geoffrion, Norman Geoffrion, Frank Geoffrion and Thomas Geoffrion of Northampton, and Leroy Geoffrion of Easthampton; a brother, Harold of Buckland, and three grandchildren. A private funeral will be conducted Wednesday morning at O'Brien Funeral Home, with burial in East Street Cemetery, both in Easthampton. There are no calling hours, and memorial contributions may be made to the Hampshire County Hospice, PO Box 1087, Northampton, 01061.
