Emmajane R. COLBY was born on 7 APR 1943. She died on 22 OCT 2003 at Nampa, Canyon County, Idaho. Her obituary appeared in the Idaho Press Tribune, Idaho on 27 OCT 2003.
Emmajane Nicholson, 60, Nampa, passed away peacefully in her sleep and went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Oct. 22, 2003, after a courageous battle with cancer.

A celebration of Emmajane's life will be held Oct. 28, 2003, at the Bethel Church of the Nazarene. Pastor Doug Wilson will officiate.

Emmajane was born on April 7, 1943, in Trinidad, CO, to Horace Frank and Nellie May (Arnold) Colby. She grew up in Colorado and attended school at North Garcia Elementary and graduated as salutatorian from Hoehne High School in 1961. She then attended Pasadena (Nazarene) College in Pasadena, California, where she met and then married Lynn Nicholson on July 26, 1965, and graduated in 1966.

While in California, she gave birth to twin daughters, Emma (little Emma) and Elizabeth, in 1968, followed by a third daughter, Elsa, in 1969. The family moved to Nampa in 1970, where Emmajane dedicated her life to children, both at church and at home, operating a home daycare for 25 years where the children affectionately called her and remembered her by the name "Big Emma."
Emmajane enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and needlework. She also enjoyed Bible study, writing and crossword puzzles. Emmajane was an important part of her grandchildren's lives, who will always remember their "Mama."

As a child, Emmajane committed her life to Christ, which impacted her entire life. Her faith and strength during her battle with cancer was an inspiration and blessing to many. She especially loved her church family at Bethel Church of the Nazarene, who cared for her as much as she cared for them.

Emmajane, you were loved dearly and will be tremendously missed as wife, Mommy, Mama, sister, aunt and friend. We look forward to reuniting with you in Heaven.

Emmajane is survived by her husband, Lynn, at their home in Nampa; three daughters, Emma (& Steven) Barkman, Elizabeth Nicholson and Elsa (& Joe) Miller, all of Nampa; two granddaughters, Stefanne Barkman and Emmalyn Barkman; three grandsons, Lynn-Steven Barkman, Seth Miller and Zane Miller, all of Nampa; six siblings, Robert (& Margie) Colby of New Jersey, Charles (& Sharon) Colby of New Mexico, Pearl (& Ray) Hafner of Kansas, Peggy (& Garland) Price of Washington, George (& Dean) Colby of Alabama and John (& Diana) Colby of New Mexico; and numerous nieces and nephews as well as other distant family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and grandma, Ruth Arnold.

The family would like to give thanks to Dr. Essner at the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, to MSTI in Boise, and to St. Luke's in Boise. Special thanks also go to Dr. Montgomery and the nurses on 4 South. We truly appreciate all of you for the excellent care you provided to Emmajane.

In keeping with Emmajane's lifelong dedication to children, the family suggests that any memorials be made in memory of Emmajane to Nazarene Compassionate Ministries. A fund has been set up under her name to assist African AIDS orphans and their caregivers.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Alsip & Persons Funeral Chapel.

COLBY, ENOCH

Came to Candia about 1750. His grandfather, whose name was also Enoch, came over at an early period from England in the Mayflower, which vessel was employed several times in bringing over passengers after her first famous voyage with the Pilgrims. He at first settled in Salisbury, Mass., and died soon after moving to Chester, NH. His father, named Enoch, married Sarah Sargent, and died in Chester. He married Abigail Blaisdell, by whom he had nine children: John, Enoch, Nehemiah, Jethro, Abner, Samuel, Abigail, William, Mary Clemens.
John, Enoch and Jethro were soldiers in the Revolution. The first named died at Valley Forge, sinking under the hardships of that memorable winter, having served four years from the commencement of the War. Jethro was in Rhode Island and died in 1780, on the "dark day," six months after his return home.
Enoch married Lydia Worthen, of Amesbury, Mass., and moved to Thornton, NH, where he for some years was a member of the House of Representatives and of the State Senate. It is told of John that being one of the first of his division at the battle of Stillwater to attack the enemy, he jumped on a piece of cannon which had been so heated by repeated discharges as to burn his feet.
Nehemiah married Mary Rowe, and settled on the home farm. He died in 1840, aged 82. Abner married Ruth Cheney, of Thornton, NH Samuel married Ruth French, and carried her behind him on horseback to Derby, VT, then a wilderness, where he died leaving a family in prosperous circumstances. William died in Ohio, in 1846. Abigail married John Colby, of Amesbury, Mass. Mary died in 1780.

On 28 February 1832, Enoch Colby, of Thornton, Grafton County, New Hampshire, aged 76 years, deposed: that he enlisted 20 April 1775, at Candia, on the Lexington Alarm, and "having previously made preparation to start at a minute's notice," marched to Cambridge, Massachusetts, under Captain Nathaniel Emerson, where he served three weeks, until a sufficient army was collected to guard Boston and vicinity, when he was discharged and returned to Candia.

That he had a brother, John Colby who enlisted during the latter part of April 1775, under Lieutenant Moses Dustin, Captain Thomas Cogswell, of Haverhill, Massachusetts, and this brother marched with his company to Brookline, Massachusetts, where he was taken sick, and with the consent of the officers, deponent took his place, 15 May 1775, and served until October. When his brother returned and completed the service, the deponent returned to Candia, having served five months.

That immediately after his return he enlisted under Captain Daniel Runnells of Londonderry, New Hampshire, Lieutenant Moses Baker of Candia, and served two months at Portsmouth and New Castle, New Hampshire.

That in June 1778, he enlisted under Captain Jacob Worthen and served in Rhode Island until Sullivan retreated which he thinks was in August or September of the same year.

That in early fall of 1779, he was at Campton, New Hampshire, and word came of the Indian's attack on Peacham, Vermont, and he immediately enlisted, marched through the woods from Thornton to Haverhill, New Hampshire, serving one month.

That he was born at Candia, new Hampshire, 27 November 1756, and lived there until 1781, when he removed to Thornton, where he has lived ever since, and that at his enlistment he signed his name Enoch Colby, Jr.

On 5 March 1833, in a letter to the Honorable Levi Woodbury, Secretary of the Navy, Edward Webster of Rumney, New Hampshire, states: "a few days since he went to Hon. Enoch Colby's, Esq., at Thornton for the purpose of taking his declaration in order to obtain a pension, ------------- found him in a low state of health, not able to leave his home. He had buried his son, Col. E. Colby, and has his own family and his son's to see to. Esq. Colby informed me that he had represented his town about 12 years and was a member of the Hon. Council eight years. etc."

On 18 September 1838, Lydia Colby, of Thornton, New Hampshire, aged 82 years, deposed: that she is the widow of Enoch Colby, the Revolutionary pensioner who died at Thorn, New Hampshire, 3 December 1833, and that she had married him 4 July 1781.

DEATH OF TWO BROTHERS

In the autumn of 1828, Enoch Colby and Sherburne Colby, sons of Nehemiah Colby, who then resided on the place on the Colby road, now owned by the widow of Rev. James Adams, were taken ill at about the same time with a disease of the lungs which finally developed in consumption. They declined very rapidly and, on Sunday forenoon, May 3, 1829, Enoch died. The announcement of his death to the people at the Congregational church during the intermission produced a profound sensation as it was known that his brother was near his end. At 8 o'clock in the evening of the same day, Sherburne also died. The funeral of the two brothers took place at the old Congregational meeting-house on Wednesday afternoon, the day following the annual May training. Col. Samuel Cass was the chief manager on the occasion. The meeting-house was completely filled by people who came from all sections of the town. The remains of the deceased which were enclosed in bright red coffins were placed upon biers in front of the pulpit. Rev. Mr. Wheeler preached an able and appropriate sermon in the course of which he spoke of the virtues of the two young men and the sad and extraordinary circumstances under which they had been cut off in their early manhood. At the close of the exercises the remains were taken to the old cemetery and buried in one grave. Enoch, the oldest brother, was 26 and Sherburne 23 years of age.
