Captain Ezekiel Colby is described as a yeoman from Newbury who bought his first land in Corinth, Vt from Col. John Taplin on 1 September 1775, one hundred acres for thirty pounds (lot 35 on town plan dated 1790, on what was known as the South Meadow, later to be known as the Elwin Hastings farm). Ezekiel Colby later sold that property to Hezekiah Silloway for three hundred pounds. Ezekiel used the title 'gentleman' on the contract of sale. Zadock Thompson's "I Gazetteer of Vermont" I (1824) states that the first men to locate in Corenth, Vt were three sugarmakers who came over from Newbury, Vt viz: Ezekiel Colby, John Nutting and John Armond, sent by Col. John Taplin in the spring of 1777 to spend several weeks manufacturing maple sugar. Each carried a five pail kettle (yes - that is what they are called.) as they traveled the twelve miles through the woods, guided by a pocket compass. They joined a number of others who were also making sugar in Corinth, including Ezekiel's future son-in-law Joshua Davis. ============================================ The following data on Capt. Ezekiel (6) Colby was provided by Mrs. Carl A. Bickford of Lisbon Falls, Maine. "CAPT. EZEKIEL COLBY (Nathan, Joseph, John, John, Anthony) b. 15 Jul 1737, Amesbury, MA; Bap Amesbury 22 Jul 1739. m. 1759 Sarah ("Sally") Fowler, b. 21 Jan 1742, South Hampt, NH, dau of Abner and Sarah (Flanders) Fowler; d 10 Aug 1817. Ezekiel d. 7 Dec 1791, Corinth, VT In the summer of 1777, Ezekiel Colby, from Newbury, began a settlement in Corinth, where his family was soon joined by others. Col. John Taplin and his sons removed thither, and became citizens of influence." (P. 84, History of Newbury, Vermont, From the Discovery of the Coos Country to Present Time, by Prederic P. Wells, In Behalf of the Town (1902). Ezekiel went to Corinth in the spring of 1777 to sugar (maple syrup) off but his in some references in attributed wrongly to his son Ezekiel. The father bought his first land in Corinth 1 Sep 1775 (p. 50 Corinth His.), and he was in Corinth in the 1790 Census. He was a captain in the local militia and began a settlement in the summer of 1777. Ezekiel's widow started selling land in January of 1793. she deeded 40 acres to Joshus Davis. Ezekiel willed sons Nathan, Hezekiah, Moses, Ezekiel, John, Abner and Henry six acres each and daughters Sarah Silloway, Hannah Noris and Mary Noyes were given three acres each (p. 101 Corinth His.) Birth records have not been found for the children of Ezekiel and Sarah (Fowler) Colby. The following list has been put together from the DAR application of Joyce Lynn Page and other sources, and a continuing effort is being made to obtain further information on these children. "Since typing above, I have ascertained that Captain Ezekiel Colby died without a will. His wife was appointed administratrix, and the estate was declared insolvent. The estate papers show that Captain Colby's debts exceeded his assets, which I assume is why the estate was declared insolvent. The lands stated to have been willed to the sons in the History of Corinth must actually have been deeded to them by Captain Colby's widow." Colby Clan News Letter. Ezekiel Colby Took His Own Life by Hanging. It is evident that Ezekiel had trouble with his mind and his health the last few years of his life. His son, Charles had died on December 27, 1855, and his wife, Tabitha died November 12, 1869. It appears that on April 18, 1883, at about ten o'clock in the morning, he was in the house and spoke of feeling hungry and ate a lunch. The family, who were in the garden, supposed he had gone to his room to rest, as was his custom. It seems that he went to the barn, cut a piece from a ¾" rope, went up on the scaffold an tied his feet together. He then put the rope around his neck, fastening it with a slipknot and passed the other end around a beam just above his head , thence around a brace and securely tied it to rope below the beam, giving about one foot of slack rope. Thus prepared, he had only to step off from the scaffold. He was discovered about noon. He was survived by his son, Hiram and his daughter, Martha Colby Thompson.
