Ethan served as a clerk in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, 1829, for Mr. Moses Kittredge, and as his partner till 1836, when he removed to Littleton, New Hampshire, and with Cyrus Eastman, became a merchant in the firm of Colby and Eastman, 1836-1838. In that year he removed to Colebrook, in company with his former partner, Moses Kittredge, and at the end of five years, he bought out his partner and carried on the business alone until, 1856, when he sold out and retired. He bought the Charberlin farm and the Chamberlin Tavern and carried on the farm there until his death. He was postmaster for several years and was elected representative to the General Court from Colebrook in 1861, and was a member of the Executive Council, 1862, from District No. 5; has declined several offices on account of ill health, including that of sheriff of Coos County. "Upon unanimous recommendation. " in 1856, and that of Commissioner on the Board of Enrolment (NH 3d Dist.), from Hon. E. B.
