He was a retired sheet metal contractor of Chicago, Ill.

Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Veenschoten and Mrs. Wesley Judson, both of Erie; a son, Edwin Colby, of Greencastle, Ind.; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a brother, Leonard Colby, of Chicago.

Funeral services will be held at the Donald C. Burton Funeral Home, 10th and Cherry, at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

(Ed. note: Mr. Colby was born September 2, 1869, per his biographical sketch)

Edwin L. Colby, proprietor of Birchwood Lodge on Garth Lake, in the town of Hazelhurst, Oneida County, was born at McHenry, Illinois, Sept 2, 1869, son of John B. and Mary (Lester) Colby. The mother is now deceased and the father is residing at Clifton, Illinois. Edwin L., was educated at Clifton, graduating from the high school there with the class of 1887, and he then became associated with his father in the hardware business, remaining in this connection until they closed out their business in 1897. He then went to Chicago and engaged in furnace installation and tin work contracting, operating in this line until 1917, when he came to Hazelhurst and purchased his present resort property from Jack Schwartz. There were than but three cottages on the site; from this beginning, however, Mr. Colby has built up a fine summer resort. He erected a main lodge 48x80 feet in dimensions, constructed of tamarack logs and having a large screened porch across the front; he has also completed five more cottages, so that the place can accommodate 50 or 60 people comfortably, and he has just finished the erection of a combined recreation hall and boathouse, extending out over the lake providing a place of entertainment for the guests, where they may spend an evening in dancing amid surrounding elfin 'beauty. Mr. Colby has constructed all the tables, chairs, and settees with which the buildings are furnished, with his own hands, using selected tamarack and cherry in fashioning these articles and achieving a very artistic effect. A fleet of ten towboats and two canoes are operated in conjunction with the resort; tennis courts are provided, and a fine heard of saddle horses and ponies for children and adults are kept on hand; in fact no feature has been overlooked in making Birchwood one of the finest resorts in this section of the country. Fine gardens, dairy, and poultry yard provide fresh country food for the tables, and all the cooking is personally supervised by Mrs. Colby; these features have combined to make the cuisine at Birchwood a thing of fame. Muskellunge, bass, pike, and trout abound in the waters about the resort, and the nimrod will find game of every description in the woods close by. Birchwood Lodge, located in a natural paradise and offering all the service and conveniences of a modern hostelry, leaves nothing to be desired as a place to spend a vacation of real pleasure.

Mr. Colby was married at Clifton, Illinois, Nov. 11, 1891, to Miss Jessie Vandruff. Three children, as follows, have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Colby: Lillian, who is now Mrs. Vincent Veenschoten of Erie, PA; Edwin G., who is operating a fox farm near Hazelhurst; and Marian, now a student in the University of Wisconsin. - History of Lincoln, Oneida and Vilas Counties.

===========================================================

He died on 30 SEP 1889 at Shabbona, De Kalb County, Illinois.
Edwin R. Colby, Supervisor of Milan Township, resident on section 33, was born Aug. 10, 1823, in Oswego, N. Y. His father, Daniel D. Colby, was a native of Onondaga County, in the same State, and descended from New England parentage and from stock originally of English origin. His grandfather was a participant in the war of the Revolution, in which he received a wound that crippled him for life. Daniel Colby fixed his residence in Oswego when he was 19 years of age, and was a resident there during the remainder of his life, which terminated when he was 82 years of age, in June, 1883. The mother of Edwin R. Colby was Elizabeth Singer, and was a sister of Isaac M. Singer, of sewing-machine notoriety. She was born in New York and was of German parentage. The Singer family were mechanics as far back as the 17th century, the father, I. M. Singer, being a millwright. The inventive genius has been transmitted to some members of every generation since, and all are skillful in the use of tools.
. .
Mr. Colby is one of 14 children born to his parents, ten sons and four daughters. Twelve reached adult age, and ten yet survive. Mr. Colby is the third child in order of birth, and he resided at home until he was 17 years of age. He had learned the trade of' cooper of a man who had been employed by his father in that business, and at the age named he set himself about the task of earning an independent living. He turned his knowledge of the business of coopering to good advantage and followed it as a vocation for 16 years, alternating in the prosecution of general farming.

He was married in 1854 to Catherine Simmons, who was born about 1824, in Connecticut, and was a farmer's daughter. Her parents removed to Oswego, where she was reared and educated. She became the mother of four children: Calvert C. married Frances Griswold and resides at Rockford, Ill., where he is employed as a moulder. Albert J. married Nettie Steele. He is also a moulder and pursues that business at Rockford. Olive married Peter Cofield, a farmer in Shabbona Township. Eliza is the wife of William Shambo, a teacher in the township of Milan. The mother died in November, 1850 in the State of New York. She was a judicious mother, an exemplary wife, and was generally esteemed. A few years after her death Mr. Colby removed to Shiawassee Co., Mich., and located on a small farm, where he pursued his trade of cooper about three years. In May, 1861, he came to Illinois and located in the township of Shabbona. He was married there in June, 1863, to Mrs. Deborah (Simpson) Collins. She was born in 1828, in Orleans Col, N. Y. She came to Illinois after her marriage. Following are the names of the children of the second marriage: Sherman T., Eddie R., Abraham A., Lovina and Nellie.

Mr. Colby resided in Shabbona Township and carried on a farm there eight years. At the end of that time he sold his place and purchased the estate he now owns in Milan Township. To this he has since added 80 acres, and the entire estate is now under excellent cultivation and improvements, with good farm buildings and fine grades of stock. He is a. Republican and has discharged the obligations of most of the township offices.

Comment 2:

Elbridge Colby was incensed by the murder in 1925 of a black soldier from Fort Benning, Georgia--shot dead when he refused to step off a sidewalk to let a white man pass. In the Nation magazine, he denounced the murderer's acquittal by an all-white jury and badly damaged his army career.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In 1925, Captain Elbridge Colby, United States Army, helped formulate the U.S. attitude towards air power as an instrument of total war. He wrote that a "belligerent will not wish to risk his planes and pilots, expend his gasoline, or waste his munitions, on any objectives except those of military importance." This was already problematic, given the U.S. tradition of defining "military targets" rather broadly.
Colby went on to say that everyone knows that bombing is highly inaccurate. "Innocent people are bound to be struck," he says, even if the bomber’s intention is to strike a genuinely military target [my italics]. He surveyed standing legal doctrine and concluded, rather predictably, that since adherence to the rules would virtually outlaw bombing, it was the rules, not the bombing, which must yield. No one, he said, could possibly be expected to forego wielding such a convenient and useful weapon. Interestingly, he cites British bombing of Afghanistan in May 1919 as telling precedent.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Born on January 4, 1920, in St. Paul, Minnesota, William Colby, a future Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, grew to his teens as an Army brat.
His father, Elbridge Colby, became a lieutenant shortly after his son’s birth, returning to the U.S. Army after seeing service in World War I.

Like so many military families, Lieutenant Colby and his wartime bride, Margaret Mary Eagan Colby, along with their son, moved frequently.

Before his sixteenth birthday, young William had experienced substantial foreign travel and could count residences from the Canal Zone to Tientsin, China, and United States addresses from Minnesota to Georgia and to Vermont.
