(Special) - Memorial services for Edward L. Colby, 80, of Destin were April 12 in Destin Elks Lodge. Colby died April 7, 1997, in Destin. He was born Sept. 21, 1916, in San Francisco, Calif. He was a flight commander in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. He served as a presiding justice for the Destin Elks Lodge 2688, and he was past president of the American Association of Airport Executives. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, Shriners, Quiet Birdmen and Trans-Oceanic Pilots Association. He was a test pilot for the Martin Corp. He had served as a director of aviation at West Texas Air Terminal in Lubbock from 1948 to 1968. He was appointed chief of the airport branch of the War Assets Administration under the Kennedy Administration. From 1968 until retiring in 1983, he was director of transportation in Palm Springs, Calif. He moved to Destin in 1991. EDWARD PORTER COLBY, Boston, Massachusetts, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, March 4, 1839, son of Enoch Long and Sarah Maria (Porter) Colby. On the father's side he is of English descent, the family being of Danish-Norman stock residing in Norfolk and Suffolk counties in England, and trace back to the time of King John. The ancestor who settled in the United States was Anthony Colby, who came over in 1632 with Governor Winthrop in the ship "Arabella" and settled in Newtown, now Cambridge, and engaged in agriculture. On the mother's side the earliest American ancestor was Matthew Porter of Plympton, Plymouth Bay colony. Dr. Colby obtained his literary education in the public schools and Claremont Academy, Claremont, New Hampshire. His medical education was acquired at Long Island College Hospital, from which he graduated M. D. in 1861. Immediately after graduation he settled in Lowell, Massachusetts, and practiced there until his acceptance of appointment as acting assistant surgeon in the United States navy, serving in the gulf blockading squadron under Admiral Farragut and others. After about three years' service he resigned and opened active practice in Wakefield, Massachusetts, practicing there over twenty-five years. He then moved to Boston, devoting his entire time to nervous diseases, in which he still continues. He has been connected with the Boston University School of Medicine since its inception, with the exception of a few years' absence on account of ill health, his first position on the faculty being that of instructor in medical botany, afterward medical chemistry. Dr. Colby is now professor of nervous diseases. For several years, or up to August 1, 1894, he was neurologist to the Massachusetts Homœopathic Hospital and is now consulting neurologist and chairman of the medical board, also member of the consulting board of Westboro Insane Hospital. He is a member of the staff of the Boston Homœopathic Dispensary and member of the consulting board of several minor hospitals. While residing in Wakefield, he served the town as member of the school board and board of health. He is a member of the Massachusetts Homœopathic Medical Society, Boston Homœopathic Medical Society, Massachusetts Surgical and Gynecological Society, American Institute of Homœopathy, National Society of Electro-Therapeutists -and its present vice-president, Hughes Medical Club and the Boston Athletic Association. He married Annie S. Judson, of South Malden, Massachusetts, December 17, 1861, by whom he has one child, William M. Colby, M. D., of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Mr. Colby, who was born in Lowell, Mass., died July 17. He was a resident of the Spokane area for 23 years. He graduated from in Lowell High School in 1933 and was in the Navy from 1933 to 1956, serving in World War II and the Korean War and achieving the rank of chief petty officer radioman. He married Dorothy Brown in 1938, and the couple divorced in 1968. After the service Mr. Colby went into civil service doing naval calibrating and worked for General Dynamics in the San Diego area. He married Bonnie Churchill in 1976. While in Spokane, he formed his own electric company, Colby Electric. Mr. Colby was a member of Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church, where he sang in the choir and played the piano for Project Joy. He was a ham radio operator and enjoyed woodworking. Survivors include his former wife and caregiver, Bonnie; three sons, Edward Colby Jr. of Fairfield, Calif., Richard Colby of Reno, Nev., and Gary Colby of Leona Valley, Calif.; three stepdaughters, Kim Simpson of Omak, Wash., Lori Finley of Veradale and Marcie Rader of Richland; a brother and a sister, both of Massachusetts; 12 grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren. He was born on May 26, 1914 in Washington, N.H., a son of William H. and Anna Colby, and attended Londonderry, N.H., schools. He graduated from Pinkerton Academy in Derry, N.H., and from the University of New Hampshire in 1935. He received a degree in medicine from Albany (N.Y.) Medical College in 1939, followed by internships and further postgraduate education at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Duke University Hospital. He later was a physician with the New Hampshire State Health Department. In 1938, he married the former Ruth Thompson. Dr. Colby was the city health officer in Portland, Maine, from 1950 until 1958, where he established one of the earliest housing inspection programs in the country, his family said. He also administered the Salk polio vaccine program study and was instrumental in discovering the viral causative agent of a contaminated drug that resulted in the death of several neurosurgical patients. In 1958, he returned to New Hampshire, where he became state health officer after acquiring a master's degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. In 1962, Dr. Colby moved to Honolulu, where he was employed by the state health department and became director of the Health Facilities Planning Council. He later received further postgraduate training in physical medicine and rehabilitation from Stanford University. Following a sabbatical, he returned to Hawaii, where he was associate medical director of the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific. He also was appointed an adjunct professor at the University of Hawaii Medical School. Dr. Colby retired in 1978. The Hawaii House of Representatives commended him with a House Resolution for a lifetime of dedication and service to his profession. He returned to New Hampshire and spent his winters in Hawaii and Venice, Fla. He and his wife lived here at the South Port Square Retirement Community since 1987. His interests included Hawaiian culture and folklore, rock and mineral collecting, orchid raising, jewelry making, woodworking, cake decorating, Chinese cuisine and oil painting. He also was a member of the Florida Life Care Residents Association, Inc. His wife, Ruth Thompson Colby, died in 1994. Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn C. Hori of Venice; a son, Donald of Port Charlotte; and a granddaughter, Lisa Hammes of Bel Air, Md. A memorial service will be held in Florida with burial at a later date in Londonderry, N.H.
