Ebenezer Colby signed the petition for the formation of the East Haverhill Church in 1743. He and his wife, Mary (Chase) renewed covenant there on 6 January 1745. He was a deacon of the church there. After 1767 he removed to Newton, N.H. and from there soon went to Sanbornton, N.H. where his son Ebenezer Jr had preceded him. He served in the Revolution in 1775 and bore the title of Captain thereafter. His service is recorded as : Ebenezer Colby, Haverhill, Captain of a company of Minute Men, Colonel Johnson's regiment, which marched on the alarm of 19 April 1775 to Cambridge, Ma; service 4 dys. Ebenezer died at Sanbornton, N.H. 13 Aug 1795, and his widow, Elizabeth, married 4th as his 2nd wife 1 Oct 1799, Benjamin Robinson. He died 7 Dec 1807 and she remained a widow until her death. At a town meeting held March 11, 1788 Ebenezer was chosen Constable. The 1790 Census shows Ebenezer's family as 1-1-2. On April 22, 1791 the town voted to follow Ebenezer Colby's proposal to buy his place and a committee was formed to appraise it's value. The 1800 Census lists Ebenezer Colby as 2-0-1-0-1-2-0-0-1. "Abutting landowners [in Bradford] often had written agreements regarding the building and maintenanceof the boundary fences. An example: 'Bradford May 9th 1810 This may certify that we the subscribers have divided the making of the Fence in the following manner. He was buried in the Old Colby Farm Cemetery at Newfield, York County, Maine On October 1832, Ebenezer Colby of Newfield, York County, Maine, aged 72 years, deposed: that he enlisted, 1777, in the New Hampshire militia, under Captain Page, Lieutenant Abijah Wheeler, and Ensign Joseph Little, and marched from Atkinson, New Hampshire, where he lived, to Bennington, Vermont, thence to Stillwater, New York, where they remained until after the surrender of Burgoyne. "A few days previous to the surrender, I was in one engagement with the enemy which lasted about an hour and a half about on mile from the barracks." He served three months and was discharged at Albany, New York. That in September 1779, he enlisted from Andover, Massachusetts, where he then resided, in the Massachusetts militia, under Captain Stephen Webster, Lieutenant Samuel Middleton, Colonel Jacob Gerrish---marched to Greenbush near Albany, New York, where they stayed three of four weeks, then down the river to a place called "Popsecunnice," where he completed his term--three months---and returned to Andover. That in April or May 1782, he enlisted with a Forage Party at the request of Colonel Hatch, of Boston, Massachusetts, who sent him word to enlist twenty men into said service. "I enlisted a part of them and one Gage enlisted the remainder. We went to Bradford, Massachusetts, where I than lived, to Boston, and from thence to New London, where we drew provisions, and from then to a place called Blooming Grove, New York, where we stayed two or three weeks, then to Burlington in Jersey about ten miles from Philadelphia where we stayed two weeks and then returned back to New Windsor with Colonel Lamb's artillery. We stayed there a few days and recruited out teams and then went down the Hudson River thirty or forty miles to "Plank's Point" where we stayed until December 1782," when his term expired. That he was born in Amesbury, Massachusetts, resided there and in adjacent towns until 1798, when he moved to Limerick, Maine, where he lived eleven years, when he went to Newfield, Maine, where he has lived ever since. On 8 October 1832, Nancy Sweatt, of Limerick, Maine, aged 65 years, testified to personal knowledge of the various enlistments of her half-brother, Ebenezer Colby (She must have been Nancy Challis, who married __?__ Sweatt.) On 17 May 1833, Ebenezer Colby stated that in order to enlist in 1782, he signed for himself, and obtained 12 other recruits. On 8 May 1841, Ebenezer Colby applied to Congress for an increase in his pension. On 10 April 1846, Joseph Colby of Newfield, Maine, aged 52 years, in behalf of himself, and Ezekiel Colby, Dolly, Colby, Mary Colby, Edward Colby, and Naomi Colby, Children of Ebenezer, deceased, renewed the application. Ebenezer Colby was an American from New York state. Why he left there, he never made known. Perhaps he liked the wilderness best, perhaps he had enemies where he lived. It is told that on into the night the settlers would hear a most outlandish noise coming from the direction of his house. Those who took the trouble to go over would find Ebenezer sitting on the ground with his legs wrapped around a post in the yard pounding a pail with a stick and howling from time to time. Similar performances are recorded by travelers in savage countries. Upon returning from a visit to New York state, he told of having been pursued by thugs all the way to Chatham and returning to his home at Ridgetown, he put up shutters over all windows and nailed the floor boards near the door, down with long spikes to prevent any attackers from crawling under the house and hoisting up the floor. He died at Ridgetown August 24, 1864, intestate. He had something of the philanthropist in his makeup, having donated the site for the first Methodist Church and first Presbyterian Church. His brother, Philander Colby, who had located north of Ridgetown on the farm that was afterwards acquired by Robert Buller, lot 11 in the 5th concession, came to Ridgetown after the death of Ebenezer and made most of the surveys and subdivisions on lot ten in the tenth concession. Philander was given credit for being the proprietor of a local mint. His coins, however, always passed at par in the settlement and his right to make them was never questioned. His house in Ridgetown is the brick dwelling behind the present B. J. Ridgetown: Dominion Press, Ltd., 1975, pp. 6-7. The fifty acres of the Colby farm bordering on Erie Street South was a veritable paradise for the boys during autumn. On this fifty acres grew hickory, chestnuts, beech, walnut and butternuts in profusion. Wild pigeons fed on beechnuts and were so numerous that a man capable of handling a shotgun, almost in any way, could fill a bag in an hour as there were thousands of them and then some. Besides pigeons, there were partridge, quail, pheasants, ducks, turkeys, black squirrels, mink, fox, raccoons and an occasion deer. -Ibid., p. 29. The first plan and subdivision, registered as such, was made by Ebenezer Colby, Plan No. 62. It consisted of about nine acres of his farm and was the area from the Royal Bank corner to the Soldier's Monument property and back to Jane Street, the street that runs in front of the Public School grounds. Thirty-two building lots of one quarter of an acre each are shown on his plan. When subdivision was made, the owner of the plot named the streets in the plot. Colby named the street back from main after himself, Ebenezer, and the next one back of that, Jane Street, for his wife, who was a Scane. -Ibid, p. 50. Philander Colby, brother of Ebenezer, who had died without children and intestate subdivided some of the original farms and sold some in bulk to be subdivided by others. -Ibid., p. 53. In 1854, the Presbyterian settlers were sufficiently numerous hereabouts to form themselves into a congregation and erect a place of worship. They acquired from Ebenezer Colby two building lots facing Ebenezer Street, at the rear of the present church, on which they built a frame church with seating capactiy for two hundred. -Ibid., p. 100. The Ralph Brien Farm, Lot 10, Concession 10, Howard Tsp. The first owner of this piece of land was an American from new York by the name of Ebenezer Colby. He settled it in about 1824, having obtained the patent from land agent Colonel Talbot. Ebenezer was one of the very first settlers of the Ridgetown area. He married Jane Scane. When the town of Ridgetown was laid out, part of the farm became Ward Three. Ebenezer and Jane streets were named after the Colbys. After St. Michael's Church was completed, the little old church, a flat-boarded log cabin, was dismantled and moved to Ridgetown by William Fitzgibbons and Timothy Hardy.
