Charles Galusha COLBY was born on 2 JAN 1829 in Ogden, Monroe County, New York. He died on 30 OCT 1866 at New York City, New York County, New York. He gave special attention to the study of astronomy and geography, and was associated with Prof. William Cranch Bond of Harvard. At the college observatory, he calculated the eclipses of July 1851, and while at the observatory contributed an article to the New York Independent on telescopes. The results of his calculations of the July eclipses were published in Harpers Magazine. In 1852-53 he assisted in the preparation of "Fisher's Statistical Gazetteer of the United States" of the "American Statistical Annual" (1853), and in editing Hunt's Merchants' Magazine, continuing with the latter publication for some years. He removed to Boston in 1861 and was an editor of the Commercial Bulletin until 1864, when he returned to New York City. He did the descriptive and statistical work in Morse's Geography of the World and in his Diamond Atlas. ---------------------------------------- Charles Galusha Colby COLBY, Charles Galusha, editor, born in Rochester, New York, in 1830; died in New York City, 30 October, 1866. He was graduated at Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut, in 1848, and soon afterward began teaching and lecturing on astronomy. In 1850 he was engaged with Prof. Bond, of Cambridge observatory, and calculated the eclipses for July, 1851, publishing his results in "Harper's Magazine" of that month. He also wrote an article on telescopes for the New York "Independent," which attracted the attention of scientific men. In the latter part of 1851 he removed to New York, where he was first employed in the office of the "American Railroad Journal," and then aided Dr. R. S. Fisher in the preparation of his "Statistical Gazetteer of the United States" and " American Statistical Annual" (New York, 1853). He afterward became assistant editor of Hunt's "Merchant's Magazine," and held the place till, on the death of Mr. Hunt, the property passed into other hands. Mr. Colby wrote the descriptive and statistical letter.press for Morse's "Geography of the World" (New York, 1856), Morse's " Diamond Atlas," and several smaller works. He was also the author of numerous cyclopaedia articles. Colby Jr., 84, formerly of Westport Island, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at Winship Green Nursing Center in Bath. He was born in Bath on April 22, 1922, a son of Charles H. and Vinetta Colby. He attended Bath schools and graduated from Morse High School. He served in the Army. He married Alice Marie Robichaud in 1944. He was employed by the Department of Transportation in Edgecomb for 30 years as a truck driver, and later was a self-employed farmer selling produce. He was very active in auto racing. He raced from 1970 to 1978 and continued to be active with his son and grandson racing. He loved hunting, farming and his daily visits to the Wiscasset Irving to meet his friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Alice Colby, on June 9, 1989; and a daughter, Diane Rittle. He is survived by a son, Charles H. Colby III and his wife, Debbie, of Newcastle; a daughter, Helen Langer of Arrowsic; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
