========================================================

He died on 23 JAN 1885 at West Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. He was buried in the Bridge Stree Cemetery at West Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts
From the Jan 1924 Chase Chronicle

In regard to Samuel Sewall Chase, he was like President Coolidge, a fine listener but spoke little. One day he came home from the mill with a wagon load of bags of meal. Arriving late in the day he did not unload and next morning when taking out the meal he found on bag missing. He did not mention the matter to anyone. About three months later one of his neighbors said, "Have you ever found out who stole your bag of Meal?" In and instant he showed the force of his personality by answering, "Yes sir, you are the one." And the man had to confess.

The old Rocks Bridge as West Newbury was supported by planks pinned together in lattice work so that driving rapidly made the bridge shake. There was a sign which read: 'Driving on this bridge faster than a walk is forbidden. Penalty 25 cents.'

One day Mr. Chase was in a hurry and he drove over the bridge at a fast clip. He was called to "Halt" and the 25 cents demanded.

The reply was, "Take another 25 cents for I am going to drive back the same way."

==========================
From the Jan. 1910 Chase Chronicle.

Fun at a Funeral

A queer place surely, but it happened. One of our kin who lived near the Training Field in West Newbury was even more peculiar than some of the Chases are said to be. He was a man of strict integrity, a kind neighbor, and worth a good property. He owned valuable fields near the village, and to make the land more valuable he laid out a wide street towards the river, down towards the Ferry Lane Burial ground.

His wife had ideas of her own, so one day she said "Mr. Chase I hear that you have been running a road right down through that lovely mowing field." "Yes, I have surely," said the tall and thin Mr. Chase. "Well," responded the wife, you may be certain of one thing-I will never use that street as you call it. I can't imagine what you may be thinking about to spoil that field." "Oh! yes wife, some day you will use it." But Mr. Chase did not reveal how or when.

Not many years later the husband died. Before the funeral the relatives were gathered in the best room to hear the will. "And I do direct that my body shall be carried to the Ferry Lane burial ground and that I shall be buried in our family lot near the front gate, and the procession shall pass down the new road that I laid out as a public way from the main road towards the river, and in this way my beloved wife will have an opportunity of passing over a road that she said she would never travel over."

After the prayers at the house, the body and the friends passed down what is now known as Prospect Street and turned in towards the family lot where the old gentleman and his wife and children: are now buried and where a tall granite shaft marks the spot.

The neighbors said that Mr. Chase always did have his own way.
