Thomas Colbran

Walter James Colbran
1890 - 1968

Sentenced to Death with the sentence commuted to Transportation for life.

Roy and Neill Colbran C1925

Thomas Colbran is a still a mystery and his wife Mary Maloney is more so. What we know about Thomas is that he was born around 1804. The only clue we have to his birth place is from his conviction and transportation records. Although convicted in  Sussex, Thomas is said to be a native of Essex.

Thomas COLBRAN'S STORY

Thomas was convicted on March 23, 1829 in the Sussex  Assizes of "Highway Robbery" and sentenced to death.

This sentence was commuted to transportation for life in the colony  of New South Wales.

Thomas was transported from England on May 22, 1829 on the "NORFOLK 2" arriving at Port Jackson on August 29, 1829.

He was assigned to Thomas Bradley at Goulburn Plains in 1832 and on   October 22, 1838 he was granted his "ticket of Leave" at Bathurst. Then on February 7, 1846 he was granted a Second Class Conditional Pardon which was confirmed on March 26, 1846.

Thomas lived in the Molong district in the central west of New South Wales and he died there May 31, 1898 at 94 years.

Thomas married Mary Maloney in 1842 and in 1856 Mary died. There are many mysteries surrounding this family and perhaps direct descendents may be able to help me solve some. The youngest son of Thomas and Mary was John, however, John is recorded as being born in 1857 but his mother died in 1856? - There was a Richard Colbran born around 1831 who is said to have been a child of Thomas and Mary, however, at his father's death John fails to record Richard as a living brother, why?

I will not attempt to detail the descendants of Thomas Colbran, If you want to see those members of this branch of family please check the link on the genealogy page and do a search, you may be there.
