William Colbran

Spencer Leonard Colbran
1898 - 1989

Mary Ranger
1794 - 1877

Thomas MILGATE
1794 - 1874

To date I have been able to trace the Colbran line back to 1706 in Sussex, England.
In 1706
Edward COLBRAN married his second wife Barbara WOOD.
Edward and Barbara had ten children, seven boys and three girls.
Their first two sons died in the same years as they were born and their fifth son also died early. Of their seven remaining children this story starts with their seventh child Edward.
Edward COLBRAN married Hannah URIDGE on May 3rd, 1741 and had six children, with their first born son John continuing this line.

WILLIAM COLBRAN'S STORY.

John married Mary CARRETT in 1773 and they had nine children with their first born child being Edward.
The story here is a little fuzzy, because although we know that
Edward was christened in 1774 and that he married a girl named Elizabeth and that they had one son, we know little else. However it was their son William who set out from England in 1839 to travel to Australia. William COLBRAN was accompanied by his wife Philadelphia BAILEY together with their son William.

The family arrived in Sydney on September 27, 1839 on the ship "Neptune".

Philadelphia had another two sons in Australia, however, they both died and for some obscure reason they had their English born son William re-christened at Cobbity in New South Wales, on June 2,1842.

Philadelphia died at the age of twenty five and it was not  until 1849 that
William took another bride, Lydia Matilda MILGATE, who would have been around sixteen and a half years old, whereas he was some twenty years her senior.

There are two branches of Colbrans in Australia that spring from William with  the roots of most, coming from his second union with Lydia Milgate.

William Colbran died in 1886 aged 74 and Lydia lived until her 87th year and died in 1919.

I will not attempt to detail the generations in Australia, If you want to see those members of our family that I have been able to trace, please check the link  on the genealogy page and do a search, you may be there.
